I have my PIP assessment tomorrow and I’m really struggling

Hi all, I don’t know how active this part of the forum is but I could really do with some experiences regarding the PIP face to face assessment. I’ve only known about my appointment since yesterday and today has been awful with anxiety and ibs, which is making my apprehension of the whole event a million times worse.

I don’t feel confident in my ability to accurately describe my daily condition, mostly because I’m ashamed and I don’t feel comfortable discussing aspects of it with my mother let alone a stranger. I think it’s the feeling of humiliation that I’m dreading the most. I will have my partner with me, he cares for me daily and will be able to give another perspective and help me if I get overwhelmed.

I live in an ATOS area if that makes any difference.

    Hi midnight,

I was really nervous before my assessment too, are you going to them or are you having a home visit? I had my visit at home. The lady was really nice though and she asked a lot of questions that I just had to answer. Try not to worry about getting everything right, she/he will be able to see your anxiety and how it is affecting you. Good luck xx

I haven’t been offered a home visit, if I’m honest I didn’t even know that was possible!

Thank you for taking the time to reply to me, are the questions they ask much the same as the form they have you fill out to start the claim?

If I remember correctly they were, yes. It wasn't as bad as I anticipated, I think that mental health awareness within these benefits is better than what it was. Let us know how you get on? Xx

Well it wasn’t actually too bad, the lady was quite kind and nice. She decided that she wasn’t going to do any touching of me at all even with my physical problems because I was quite visibly uncomfortable. I feel bad for not being able to make better eye contact and things but I was really very uncomfortable.

Mouse, don't feel bad re: eye contact. Really it's supporting evidence of your anxiety isn't it. I'm glad it went well. Do you know when you'll hear? Xx

I guess it does, I didn’t force myself to behave ‘normal’ as I thought it would be better if they can see what I actually feel.

She said anything up to 6 weeks is normal and then to bug them if it’s any longer than that.
