This literally just happened. I was just about to go downstairs to make a drink and my gums started bleeding..a lot! I was just sitting here, not brushing my teeth or anything.. What on earth is going on? I'm really scared now :(

Gingivitis.
See your dentist. He or she will probably give you Chlorhexidine mouthwash and possibly antibiotics if infection is severe.
Nothing to lose sleep over or even get anxious about.
I've had gingivitis (gum disease) for a few years now. I seem to go through periods of no bleeding, only for it to return.
Good luck

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle
Did you eat anything sharp prior? Like potato chips? Otherwise yes, it sounds like gingivitis or periodontitis (unlikely the second one). If you have too much plaque built up, it can irritate your gums and cause them to swell up with fluid...making them prone to bleeding without provocation. It isn't life-threatening or super serious, but it is something you should get checked out promptly to prevent further destruction.
Any swelling? I sometimes get things stuck between my teeth which cause some swelling and bleeding. Bit of flossing and salted mouthwash and it returns to normal quite soon.
But like above, check with dentist is good advice.
If it’s Gingivitis, try to keep a better mouth hygiene and remember to floss, I had I little some small trace of it becfore and my dentist wanted to see me every 6 months for a proper clean out and she told me how important it was to also brush the gums with a super soft toothbrush.
I'm the same as RadiiGaGa.
I even asked the dentist about it.
Just a good clean and mouthwash will clear it up.
Also heat can bring it on if you have radiators too high and like someone else saud, a bit of food lodged in one of your teeth.
Have you recently quit smoking? Bleeding gums is a massive symptom of quitting as smoking prohibits blood getting to the gums
If so get some interdental brushes clean in between teeth use mouthwash and it will clear up in a few weeks
Lack of vitamin c can also cause random bleeding
