Food went down the wrong way?

hello, i was eating some food and it started to go down the wrong way. I coughed, it came up but then i swallowed and i don’t know why.

I didn’t cough the second time and nothing seems lodged / stuck, i can talk normally and everything. But i am now in a panic that i swallowed it down the wrong pipe and now its in my lungs :(

i’ve never been anxious about swallowing / choking before, but i’m in an absolute state right now.

Trying not to google because i know that will make me worse :(

I’ve been so much better with my anxiety lately, i’ve not been anxious at all and now i’m upset at myself for getting anxious again. Ugh :(

Going by your profile picture, I assume you're young, healthy and have no other health issues going on

It's extremely unlikely this will cause any issues. The "cilia" in your lungs work to sweep junk out of your lungs.

    Good luck

If it was in your lungs, you'd be very much aware of it. Find a way to distract yourself, maybe?

I’m as healthy as i can be. I have Long QT Syndrome and Asthma, but other than that i have no issues. Just the anxiety problems really.

Thank you for the reassurance, i hope its that simple!

Thats what i initially thought. It was quite a big piece of food, so to cough it up and then to go down the same
pipe i’m assuming i would have coughed it up again at least. But it went down easily.

Trying to distract myself, thanks for your reassurance

You swallowed because the food stimulated your swallowing reflex, as it was in the right place to be swallowed. You coughed it up into the right part of your throat (oesophagus) and then your body took over, and made you do the right thing! Basically, everything that was meant to happen to STOP food going to your lungs happened, just according to plan. Your larynx detected a foreign body, it was coughed up and then swallowed. The human body is designed to stop things going into the lungs. It worked. Nothing will be in your lungs....you'd still be coughing like a drain !
