    Breast lump! Panic

    Hi all
So I've just started a new job and everything was looking quite hopeful for me for a change...until this morning when I felt a tiny lump in my right breast. Kind of on the inside just above the nipple. I instantly freaked out and booked an emergency appointment. Doctor examined me and said she could feel a small pea like lump.... she said it was mobile and smooth in texture. She checked for lumps under armpits and said that was fine. I was kinda praying she was going to say she couldn't feel anything, but she has referred me "just to be sure". She said she's 90 % sure its nothing but she can't know for sure. Now I'm freaking out and can't concentrate on my work. I have no history of breast cancer in mothers side, but don't know about my dad's mother as she died young. I'm 32 and female. Are small lumps quite common in women? I mean, my greats are pretty lumpy anyway, and I feel I would always find a "lump" if i looked hard enough. Just wish the doc hadn't confirmed it.... Any similar experiences? Thanks in advance ☹

    Re: Breast lump! Panic

Hello! First of all, sorry that you've found yourself in this situation. We're told so many things about breast lumps that it's hard to know what is normal and what isn't. While it's good to be aware of the signs of breast cancer, sometimes I feel like there's almost too much info out there.

Small breast lumps that are smooth and mobile are quite common. I have one or two, which are normal/harmless. From what you've said it sounds like it's not anything to worry about, the reason the doctor probably referred you is because there are often guidelines that state that anyone presenting with a new lump should be referred. I had a similar experience earlier this year where I was referred despite the doctor not being hugely worried. Breast lumps and changes are one thing that GPs will almost always refer to the breast clinic even if they don't think it's cancer.

I would bet money on you not having breast cancer, so while I think you should go because you have been to the GP now and set the wheels in motion, try to relax about finding something awful. The vast majority of referrals to the breast clinic are benign, and at your age (I am a similar age), the chances are minute.

Hi there. So sorry to hear you are so anxious. I have had a few mammograms over the years and I remember finding a lump at exactly your age. I was referred by my GP for an ultrasound and it turned out to be nothing just some tissue. A GP will refer you for re assurance but for health anxiety sufferers like myself, we never hear those words, we assume the worst. Highly unlikely this is anything to be worried about at your age. You have stats on your side. The amount of my friends and colleagues that are back and forth to the breast clinic with various lumps etc and all turn out to be fine. 90% are benign. Don't fret and please stay off Dr Google.

Hi both. Thanks for your responses. I think when I first felt this lumpy thing, I was like, OK, that's gonna be cancer. But since listening to you and realising a lump doesn't = cancer has helped so much. Good to hear finding lumps is quite common. Both your comments really helped in calming me down and rationalise my thoughts. This forum is so important for all people who suffer from health anxiety.x

    Hi,
I have two small, pretty mobile little lumps in the same breast - doctor checked and said they were called breast mice or something!? Think they're pretty common. X

Finding 'lumps' and then being benign is incredibly common, infact that is the usual. They are 'breast clinics' and not 'breast cancer clinics' after all. Over 80 percent of referrals to the clinic are for benign reasons!

Pimple on breast to go with lump..

    Hi all
I found a small hard lump in my boob about 3 weeks ago and due to see specialist next week...
But then I've had this pink raised pimple on the same breast for past few days. It doesnt contain any pus and just bled a little when I squeezed it.
I decided to Google (I know!) and apparently a pimple can be a sign of breast cancer. Obviously with the lump AND now a pimple thing, im on the verge of a panic.
    32, female.
    Thanks in advance

I found a lump in my breast while breastfeeding my son when he was 5 weeks old. When my Dr. examined me he also found swollen lymph nodes in my armpit. You can imagine my horror at that point. I was referred to my local breast care center and had an ultrasound and biopsy done. All was clear! The radiologist said benign breast lumps in women is VERY common. They’re hormone driven, so are common in young women of childbearing age. Please don’t worry. I know it’s easier said than done, but the odds of breast cancer at your age is very rare.

Hiya babe! DO NOT worry - so the first time I felt a lump in my boob (literally never much thought about it even with HA, I was more obsessed with MS) I was pregnant - I was about to go to sleep and my hand brushed passed it, I’ve literally never ever been so worried and panicked thinking I won’t be alive to see him and things, anyway my GP referred me and like you said it was small pea like mobile and smooth, all good signs - apparently cancerous lumps are more uneven jagged and rock hard she said. Anyway I went and they gave me an ultrasound and saw the lump, it wasn’t a cyst as I was hoping because then I knew they could see instantly it was filled with fluid and my mind would of been settled but they did a biopsy and I was told after a few days it is a fibroadenoma... this is as some one above says a ‘breast mouse’ my pregnancy hormones caused it to grow, could of been there forever and I only noticed because it got bigger and now I could feel it, since having my baby it’s shrunk and they did a follow up appointment- all ok! I found it so so scary and I’m still getting over the worry about BC but I have to keep reminding myself - ITS FINE!!!! And I bet u by the description and your age (similar to me) maybe u have the same thing or a cyst - my mum gets quite a few cysts and has to have them checked every time! Love to you xx
