    Terrified of colonoscopy

Hi Got to have another colonoscopy 7 years since I had first. Saw GP 18 months ago after bad bleeding in stools and stomach cramps-did stool test was ok by then. He wouldn't refer me as I had been years earlier. Now 18 months on had another bad episode this time new GP referred me right away. Now worried it should have been 18 months earlier. Also Specialist wont do the sigmoidoscopy that gp mentioned only full colonoscopy so he said why! more worried now. also the first one was so painful even with muscle relaxant and painkiller injection was agony in fact. I hoped never to have it again. He said he cannot force me but i do not have a choice. Going to be about a month off as got a holiday in middle, though no way i can enjoy it with this worry. Also got treadmill test for suspected angina tomorrow was taken to hospital with chest pains a month ago and then they found a murmur as well as the ectopics I had already! That was bad enough without this on top! Cousin had big op for BC in Dec and grandfather died of it. No one took any notice of that till now! However cousin was not given a colonoscopy soon enough they blamed diverticulosis. He did ahve a scope years earlier. Hoping that if it was ok 7 years ago it will be now, but apart from me being coeliac and lactose intolerant cannot think of reason for bleeding episodes. Help!

    Re: Terrified of colonoscopy

I get bleeding and it is all down to piles.

I have colonoscopies every 2 years and have them without any sedation or pain relief.

Maybe last time they didn't give you enough sedation so ask for some more this time.

You know you have to have it so I am afraid you are just going to have to grin and bear it so to speak.

    Good luck.

    Thanks Nicola,
How is it that you still need one even though they say piles?. i Guess to be safe side? Are they internal piles?Do you not get the horrific pain as it goes around corners? Childbirth was better! My GP didn't see any inside though guess could still be further up. I had been given aspirin and had eaten pop corn which I normally would not do. I did not have sedation as it just stops you remembering the pain, still have to go through it.

Oh sorry I meant the bleeding comes from piles. Yes mine are internal.

I have Crohn's disease/Colitis and diverticular but they say the bleeding is not from that.

I do get pain but I have a high pain threshold when it comes to things like that for some reason and I watch it on the screen. Yes it is not pleasant but something I can tolerate well.

You can use gas and air as well if you want to.

    Re: Terrified of colonoscopy

Hi thanks for that, the hospital I went to said they do not give gas and air, that's why I never got it last time, seems barbaric to me so going to ask to go back to local NHS hospital, this was a spire one. I was screaming in agony last time!
    Thanks again

    Re: Terrified of colonoscopy

Maybe they have it now as it is a long time since you went and no idea why they wouldn't have it - how odd!

But yeah if not then go back to NHS
