I think normally it would be overstepping the mark to give more specific details however it's not uncommon to make it clear someone vulnerable has gone missing. It changes the perception of the case.
I think this is an unusual case. It has led to a private specialist coming forward for free to search. There are idiots taking selfies and now amateur investigators interfering. How often does any of this happen?
We also had an early possible kidnapping theme. The police had to reassure the local public there wasn't a maniac on the loose to prevent panic. They do just the same when children disappear because the area is full of concerned parents.
And it was painted as a happy person goes missing. There was no reason so the criminal element became a focus.
If they had said a vulnerable person had gone missing a lot of speculation would be on mental state and potential self harm or breakdown.
So given such an unusual focus on a case I wonder whether this extra detail is to refocus speculation? Regardless of the family asking for it people aren't going to stop talking and they never did before the internet. But such an unusual case pointed away from a vulnerable person and that did invite speculation the family may find how to read. Whilst they may not want to hear it the police themselves have to consider every possibility. Such crimes do happen.
And now the politicians have seen their chance to piggyback.
So the police will be spending more resources dealing with idiots who seem more interested in the use of the word menstruation than finding the poor woman.
