    Re: Today’s headlines .........

It's more the intrusion from these random pop-ups that often fill the whole screen on my phone whilst interrupting what I'm doing on this site, that I find really jarring.

I don't enter competitions willy-nilly, so I haven't won any prizes (in the most recent case a Dyson), so it's got to be a scam.

Plus it's really beyond me how such a big global household name like Google can really get away with such things, even if they're not actually sanctioning such practices themselves, and inadvertently risking their corporate reputation.

Alternatively, it could be some online villains 'posing' as Google, of which the 'real' Google seriously need to bring to book before something really nasty happens!

But as others have said upthread, these dubious things are best ignored and avoided like the plague, plus I only decide to go out and buy things if I really want or need them.

I do actually have a Smeg kettle lol. Mr Batty treated himself to a coffee machine (dude's a coffee snob) and he got me a kettle. (My other one had given up switching itself off)

I'd certainly be smug if I owned a Smeg kettle..I want a pink one!! I love their huge pink fridges too!!

Are they actually any good at boiling water though, Nora?

A kettle is a kettle to me, P. As long as it boils water (and switches off) I'm good to go. (It looks smart though)

I love their fridges too, but they are waaaay too expensive to buy new (would consider 2nd hand). They look solid, like they'd take being walloped with a baseball bat. Whereas I have a Logik and you only have to stare at it and a dent appears...

    Whereas in Britain....
Good god, with the words 'A nip now and then' and 'it never did anyone any harm', I thought this was going to be a post in favour of smacking children (eek), but it's a whole 'nother story about encouraging boozing in Japan in order to boost the flagging economy and population.

Just imagine the epic furore if that was suggested here?

I presume you're referring to the article encouraging Japanese youngsters to booze more.

In order to help the economy I can kind of understand, but in order to help them live longer sounds a bit nonsensical and far-fetched to me.

However, some people obviously happen to enjoy and be amused by articles about weird, seemingly 'beyond-the-pale' stuff!
