Taking 45mg Mirtazapine in the Mornings

In general, it is suggested that Mirtazapine is taken in the evening. At the lower doses this makes sense, given the sedating qualities of the drug at low doses.

However, given that Mirtazapine is more activating at the higher doses, wouldn’t it make more sense to recommend taking the highest dose (45mg) in the mornings in order to maximize the daytime benefit?

Has anyone done this? If so, how did you get on?

Does anyone think that taking 45mg in the morning is a really bad idea, and if so, why?

How about splitting the dose? 30mg morning, 15mg at night. Might make sense, rather than taking the whole lot in one go.

Yes, I have considered that. Was just sounding out the opinion on taking the whole dose in the morning.

Have you been prescribed 45mg then?

Why don't you try taking the whole dose in the morning and see how you feel, because there is no "good" or "bad" idea as long as the med does what it's supposed to do, and as individuals our experiences will probably vary.

I take a total of 45mg and was taking 30mg at night with 15 in the morning. After feeling a bit woozy while driving I've started taking all the 45mg at night.

Yes, have slowly gone up from 15-45mg on advice from GP.

I am considering taking the whole dose in the morning rather than the evening. I was just sounding out the group to see if someone had any experience of doing that. Can’t see any real problems given that any sedating effect tends to be eroded by time. I suppose the worse that could happen is that I fall asleep during the day.

I’ve seen posts where people split the 45mg into two separate doses, but they tend to take the lower dose at night to take advantage of the sedating effect.

I take 45mg at night along with lithium. I have been taking it for over fifteen years. I still find the mirtazapine sedating at night rather than the lithium being sedating.

Wow! 15 years! And it’s obviously still working for you. Great stuff. I still get a bit of sedation from the 45mg, but not as much as would make life intolerable should I choose to take it in the morning. Driving might be an issue, but as I’m retired there’s nothing in my life that would not make driving for a while an issue.

Oh well. Won’t be taking my Mirt in the morning after all. Tried it, but it’s a no. There’s still some sedation at 45mg.
