I know everyone tells me not to, but it's hard not to at the moment.

She was meant to have a scan yesterday but the couldn't fit her in, so that's not good either. I don't understand why nothing is being done or rushed. She's very ill and her liver could get seriously damaged.

I sat in with her yesterday for a few hours while my partner took a break, but I miss her so much at home.

Maybe things aren't as bad as you fear? They would have scanned her as an emergency otherwise. It wouldn't have been a question of fitting her in.

Pulisa's right - the scan being delayed is actually a good sign. There's no way she would have been bumped if it was an emergency situation.

It’s ok to be scared and upset, we all would be. Just make sure everyone isn’t worrying about you too? All focus should be on your children and giving them reassurance and support. You can handle this, and you can handle it best if you distract yourself in other more positive ways.
It’s time like this that you realise your children are so much more resilient than their parents. Take your strength from them x

I know you're both trying to be reassuring, and thanks so much for replying.

But you know, this is just not looking good is it. I can't see how it can be anything simple when they're constantly monitoring her blood, and sent so many away to be tested.

The nurse said yesterday that she may have to be referred up to Birmingham Childrens Hospital, not to alarm us.

I knew she was coming down with something other than a bug, but never in my world I expected this. I'm just so devastated.

You're speculating, which isn't healthy. All you can do is live in the moment and be the best father you can to both your daughters.

I agree with what everyone is saying. With kids they don't mess about. People come in as outpatients for scans daily and they would easily get bumped for any urgent patient.

Get away from Google and do something nice for your girl. A project with your other child to make her a card? Make her room nice for her. Get a nice gift.

They are engaging with one of (I think) 3 centres that deal with children who have the best specialists in the country. That's scary, naturally, but it's likely just BAU to the doctors just as a cardio ward might link up with experts at other hospitals. We have a specialist virology centre at mine so they will get calls from other hospitals.

It's hard to sit and watch but she is stable. That's much better than not being so. With infections they halt it and then you spend days on IV and oral antibiotics, amongst other things in a drip, to get rid of it. IV antibiotics are very fast acting and powerful. Within days you can be much better and doctors sit monitoring to be sure they've sorted it. More tests will happen but that's them being sure.

My cousin was in Birmingham as a transfer many years ago. It might not come to it but if it does they are fantastic there.

You haven't been told anything yet, Mr L.

I presume that this is the first time that one of your children has been in hospital? It's common procedure to have loads of bloods taken. Have you actually asked the paediatrician what her treatment plan is?

    Re: Various Health Fears

Hi all, I've got an update.

My daughter was allowed to come home tonight after a Vitamin K treatment, but still has the hospital bed open incase. This was a huge surprise, because she had a scan at 3pm, and then we didn't get another update from a doctor till 7.30pm. The wait was awful. She will given vitamin K again tomorrow and Sunday and probably ongoing until some point - I can't remember what the doctor said. Another liver function test and bloods on Monday.

Her liver blood test today revealed a decrease in the level of something they were very worried about, but some others still haven't come down. However they are happy with the decrease in the main one - I don't know what it's called, and didn't ask.

Her scan seemed fine. Liver still enlarged but no abnormalities, cysts, cancers etc. I didn't ask about liver damage, and didn't ask about liver failure. And I forgot to ask about autoimmune hepatitis which was another thing I was worried about.

The doctor said they still think this is an acute viral thing, which got me worried because acute liver failure can be worse than chronic liver failure. Although am I overthinking?

So I'm somewhat relieved, and absolutely delighted she's coming home, but I'm still thinking what ifs. Not out of the woods yet, although this was positive, and relief for now.

    Re: Various Health Fears

My Dad is in the hospital as I write this. He has esophagus issues and had to have procedures to open it up. Due to several factors, they're keeping him in the hospital until at least Monday or Tuesday. I can assure you, they wouldn't have let your daughter come home if they felt she was threatened in any way. And yes, you're definitely overthinking. Please stop Googling! You say its hard but truly, is it harder than being a Dad? Don't diminish your strength and inner fortitude and sacrifice the strength you need as a father by Googling and spiraling in negativity. She needs you more than you need Google!
