Yes, I knew that. But we would have gone the combined route and would be struggling to get vaccine.

Some political parties wanted that route. But having the excuse to ignore the Commission due to Brexit gave a route out that has paid off.

He has been lucky. I bet he thought why me when this virus came along making things a lot harder than he was expecting.

We don't know what the alternative strategies would have been since the leadership has changed. All we know is the civil servants would have been there offering the same advice.

But it's great that we are now so far ahead that we are looking at a return to previous life.

I hope this period is used to form future strategy led by science and a bit less by politics. Maybe better protections for the economy so that people are more insulated against a future major event like this, if that's possible.

No, Terry; forgive me, but I think your Brexit Blinkers are kicking in here. Read it again, and below; we always had the option to bypass the EMA arrangements, as did any other country. We chose to exercise that option, as has Hungary IIRC.

Meanwhile, I can't see this being popular in some quarters: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-56202645

I give you Exercise Cygnus. Run in 2016.

Pity we learned so little from it....

I already knew all about the EMA opt out. That's not my point. My point was that we wouldn't have exercised it.

But we did, Terry! We exercised the right to do so whilst we were still in the transition period to apply our provision to opt out.

    However... from https://www.theguardian.com/world/co...ination-fiasco
True, Britain got a month’s head start on the EU by approving the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine at the start of December, and then AstraZeneca’s at the end of that month. It had to accept the terms offered by the pharmaceutical companies, however, both in paying a higher price per dose, and by waiving their civil liability in the event of adverse effects.
Have you read ANY of the links I've posted, or is this just your Brexit dogma again?

I don't need to as I already knew the policy allowing all EU states to opt out. They didn't.

My belief is that because we are in an environment where public opinion allows us to go another way, we did. Transition and Brexit are irrelevant other than what the government could do given the public mood.

I don't believe that would have been the case if we were weren't leaving. A happy EU member with a happy EU supporting public would have stood in solidarity with the Commission who pulled back countries trying to go their own way in favour of a combined approach aimed at preserving their role (which should have helped poorer members get pulled along by more powerful ones).

It's possible we would have but I don't believe it. Politicians are lazy. Some political parties wanted to opt in so if they were in power we know where we would be now.

That's what my first post implied.
