    Accidentally ate expired feta

    Hi,

This isn’t the first time that I have accidentally eaten expired cheese but I’m worried about the fact that it’s feta and whether that means its less safe (the last time I did this it was with cheddar which I reckon a lot of people accidentally eat old).

I had eaten maybe six cubes of feta, not loads but I’m not too sure as I wasn’t really paying attention. It was cubed feta in salted brine water. Half way through eating this I just looked at the date and it said 3/05/2020 so nearly three weeks old.

I’m trying not to google search because I think it will scare me.

It tasted alright to me and it smelled normal and wasn’t mouldy. But unfortunately because of my emetophobia a massive panic attack ensued and now I feel quite ill hours down the line (likely from the panic attack).

    Will it make me ill?

Its been about three hours now.

    Thank you

I think you’ll be alright! At least it’s a good experiment in use by dates

Feta keeps for ages anyway, even more so when you preserve it in oil. If it was three years out of date? I might be nervous. Three weeks, though? Not a chance.

I eat out of date cheese, Quark and yoghurt. It keeps past the dates. You would see mould on cheese. On something like yoghurt or Quark cheese you see mould again but it starts to taste of vinegar.

So if it looked, smelt and tasted fine it's ok. The dates aren't set in stone and they always advise the old sense tests anyway since something can go off earlier than the date.

Remember sell-by/best before dates are there as rough guidance and are only estimates/approximations and not 'absolute'.
