Couldn’t swallow for a few seconds!

Hey everyone!

Hope you all are doing well! I had this weird incident 5 days ago. I was watching a movie and was pretty relaxed eating some chips when all of a sudden I couldn’t swallow. The whole thing lasted 3 seconds top and then swallowing was back to normal. It happened again today while eating popcorn and watching a show! I panicked like insane. Again, it went away in seconds. I am now reeling with worry about brain tumors, MS and ALS. Has this ever happened to anyone?

I’ve had that before, it’s like your swallow isn’t ready! Usually a good gulp and it gets better. It’s honestly just one of those things and not worth wasting worry on.

How do you know this is related to MS/ALS etc?

Has it really? As though you’ve forgotten how to swallow?

I honestly assumed that if it’s an automatic muscle issue then it’s probably related to the nervous system and therefore brain/neuro stuff. 😕😕😕😕

This happened to me for the first time about a year ago. It threw me into one of the biggest panic attacks I've ever had. For me, my doctor and I both think it was related to my TMJ. It was almost like my jaw and throat all locked up. After the first time my anxiety was elevated for a good while and it would keep happening. She prescribed me some Ativan and it immediately resolved because it was all anxiety.

Thanks for sharing that Erin. It is scary indeed but I am glad that your doc understood it was anxiety and nothing more scary..

I've had this happen occasionally over the years too! I always just assumed it was one of my weird anxiety things haha, it tends to happen more if I focus on it, my bet is your just fine!

I actually have this all the time, don’t remember when it happened for the first time but I do remember the first time after my anxiety had progressed definitely had an attack with it. My swallow doesn’t work right away when I’m drinking especially, I have to wait a moment with the liquid in my mouth quite often.
