    Advice needed (possible triggers)

Hi guys I am in need of some advice.

I have had a mouth ulcer for about 3 months. It originally hurt and was swollen and has since stopped hurting and the swelling has gone down some. I have still got a white patch which I assume is still an ulcer. I did send photos after 3 weeks to the dentist who said it looked ok. The dentist looked at it 3 weeks ago and said they dont think it is anything nasty but to call in 3 weeks if still there. 3 weeks is up so I called her. She has now referred me to a specialist to rule out anything nasty but told me not to worry.

I would love to take her advice but the thought of a specialist fills me with anxious thoughts. The last time I saw a specialist was when they told me I had ms so i am automatically thinking the worst in this case.

Has anyone got any advice they can offer? Has anyone else been to a specialist only to be told they are healthy? Sorry for the long message

I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience the last time you went to a specialist. I get why you're feeling wary now, given what has happened to you before.

I haven't had a referral to a dental specialist before, but I've been to a different kind of specialist and been diagnosed with a benign condition after freaking out a whole lot. My doctor referred me to a neurologist because of my strange movement disorder in my toes because she hadn't seen anything like it before but the neurologist saw it and he knew it wasn't anything to be worried about pretty quickly. Sometimes medical professionals refer you because they just don't know enough about a specific topic to know whether it's anything to worry about and it doesn't mean anything bad.

My mum has had to go see specialists to look at lumps before and a weird mole she had and she is healthy too. I think sometimes general practitioners will refer you even when the chance that you actually have anything is really low because they want to make sure. They're not really thinking "which horrible disease does this person have" they're thinking "lets rule out this possibility so we can focus on the others". By the sounds of it that's what your dentist is doing, since she just wants to rule out anything bad and doesn't think it's anything to worry about. In her professional opinion, she thinks that it's not anything scary, which is a good sign! And she sees mouth ulcers all the time, whereas the anxiety voice in your head doesn't, so she's probably the better judge.

I hope your ulcer clears up soon! They can really suck.

My son has multiple ulcers due to self-inflicted trauma and the maxillo facial consultant has always recommended topical corsodyl gel (not the toothpaste) which you can get online. My son was referred to hospital but all was well in terms of there being any nasty stuff going on. These ulcers can take a long time to heal but it's always best to get them checked by an expert. I do understand your fear though, pav

Cheers guys, I appreciate your replies. I think I just panicked and it is good to hear happy outcomes. You are right my anxiety voice will give me bad thoughts.

Thanks once again for your help
