    Genericised Trademarks (or Brandnomers)

This is a more light-hearted thread, as its main subject is often the source of great amusement for me in particular.

It's about the naming of certain items after the most common brand names of said items, with probably the best-
known example being vacuum cleaners being referred to as Hoovers, despite the same basic devices being from several other manufacturers/brands.

Another one that really makes me laugh is when sound systems installed in certain public places for both piped music and spoken public announcements are often referred to as 'Tannoy' systems, but surely speakers and associated gear from other manufacturers are also used in such installations.

Post it is the only one on this list that I've ever used! #American

For me, the biggest ones are Kleenex (tissues), Xerox (photocopies), and Clorox (bleach).

Never heard of that sauce, at least not here in Blighty.

Though I'm more than happy to be proved otherwise.
