    Lumpy breast

    Hi all

I’m just wondering if anyone else has experienced the same as me....

I’m 41 yrs old and I’m pretty sure I’m peri menopausal at this point!

I noticed a few weeks back the very top of my breast, almost I would say chest area feels pretty lumpy....

Although I have similar in both boobs my left feels lumpier with in area feeling a like rope like!

I know I should call the GP but thought I would ask if anyone else has experienced this before, I have got myself so worked up over it

Yes, I have experienced it, when I was 24 years old and in exactly the area you describe. (I am now 52) It was hormonal breast tissue changes. It is entirely possible that your peri hormonal changes are producing tissue changes, along with natural aging, loss of fatty cells, stretched ligaments and sudden self-awareness of a particular area. At 41 though (lets not beat around the bush here, non-benign changes are more likely heading towards 50) there is no harm in getting your GP to do a very quick manual examination, then that gives you a base-line for what is 'normal' for you. The vast majority of breast changes are for benign reasons, and there is no reason to doubt otherwise for yourself, but this is such an accessible area that even a quick exam (without ultrasound) would help put your mind at rest. I do wonder how you are also doing your breast exam, is it the correct way according to guidance ?

    Thanks Carys

I have always had somewhat lumpy boobs but for some reason my anxiety with it has kicked off recently!

I must admit I tend to go digging around with my finger tips and I know doing this is asking for trouble!

If I examine laying down with the pads of my fingers I barely feel anything but examining stood up and digging about I tend to find things....

I don’t think I will truly settle until I have seen my GP so will give them a call tomorrow and see if they will see me now we have headed back into lock down!

Thanks again for replying to me

    Xx

Ahha, then that sound very like most women of a certain age, and a very encouraging sign indeed that what you are feeling is normal.

I’m off to the drs in a little bit, I have never seen this GP before and she has really blown my mind with our phone consultation!

She was talking about taking bloods to check for cancer, markers, referral for diagnosis and I’m petrified!

Oh well, first step taken I guess!

Quick update! Had a breast exam, dr said the area I’m concerned about is more on my chest but she doesn’t think it’s sinister.

She’s sent me off for blood work and referred me to the breast clinic anyway under the 2 week rule ‘ to be safe’ she said.

I’m just wondering if the clinics are still working to the 2 week time frame now we are locked down again.... anyone have any experience?

    Xx

Crikey, thats errrr, excessive and premature. I'm not surprised that the phone consultation freaked you out ! Breast tissue and fat associated with it, particularly lymph nodes, do extend quite high onto the chest, obviously it becomes thinner the higher it goes.

The 2 week rule, should still be working, but as has been evident - different areas have different pressures during covid. My own experience of the breast clinic in my area is that during lockdown number 1 last March it was a disaster, and things cancelled/delayed. Over the following 2 months they got themselves back in order as they managed to filter covid people off to a separate process, and they then put in place their own stringent procedures to be able to catch back up. Then they were twiddling their thumbs for some time, the staff, as the public were cancelling on them and the staff were only dealing with non-covid issues so free to work. I really don't know what it might be like now in lockdown 2, and as I say it varies in different hospitals and areas, but I would certainly be hopeful that the two week rule should apply providing they aren't still playing catch-up.

I don't know if anybody else has any more recent experience ? One place you could ask is on

It isn't just for diagnosed people, unlike some other specialist forums and support people who are worried about any changes/symptoms or test results. If you go to the forum, then choose 'have I got breast cancer' and then choose 'Appointments and waiting for test results' I'm sure somebody would be along with recent experience to help in your query.

Have popped over and asked the question!

Keeping everything crossed I’m not waiting to long or I will be a basket case!
