Breast pain for months, clear ultrasound, could ultrasound miss things?

I've had breast pain in one breast for about two months now. Some weeks its better and some its worse but lately its been bad. My breast feels really sensitive and tender and it hurts when i move it. I got an ultrasound a month ago and it came back totally clear but I've gotten no explanation for pain. My next step would be seeing breast specialists but I'm not sure if that's my anxiety talking. Anyone had something like this happen? How likely is it the ultrasound missed something?

This is common in perimenopause and close to menopause, particularly on one side - I believe you are at that point in terms of your reproductive life ? Its likely hormonal. Nothing has been found with ultrasound, why would you need any further investigation ?

I’m only 26 so I hope not perimenopause.

I have read that ultrasounds can miss cancers, perhaps try for a further investigation such as biopsy etc to see if they find anything?

Oh sorry, I had you at the wrong age, mixed up with someone else.

They can't just biopsy 'nothing', biopsies can only be done to suspect tissue. I should imagine that whoever did your ultrasound (and yes it is a pretty accurate method of checking areas, more so than mammogram for younger women) told you what they suspected the issue was, and certainly not cancer ?! If they really did say 'we don't know why' but theres nothing there to be seen of concern, then why not look into simple ways breast pain could be caused - ill fitting bras, bad posture, sleeping on one side, hormonal changes. Anything that is 'sometimes better and sometimes worse' is nothing sinister, period, don't waste time with more investigations. You've had this fear about Inflammatory Breast Cancer on and off for a long time, thats all this is, you are imagining you have this cancer, and you don't.

Let’s think about this logically. That’s what I TRY to do. I do have HA but I know about this topic as I had a preventative mastectomy in 2012. So I had an ultrasound and mammogram prior to my surgery. They were both fine. I also had an MRI which revealed I had a benign adenoma. This didn’t show on ultrasound or mammogram but I also had very heavy dense breast tissue. I say this not to scare you at all but to educate women about their breast. I do have a breast specialist that did my surgery. MRI is the only tool that can really say 200% you don’t have an issue, but breast pain is USUALLY NOT an indication of BC. In fact, most BC have zero symptoms. MRI is usually recommended for women with heavy dense breasts or a history of breast cancer in family. A specialist will usually approve a breast MRI if their are ongoing issues. Keep in mind my growth was common and benign. Also keep in mind with having very heavy dense breasts the MRI was impt. For women without heavy and dense breast tissue, a mammogram and ultrasound are good, reliable tools to rule out any abnormal issues. Also if you’re experiencing pain, and are worried about it being “bad”, and if that pain was caused by something worrisome, that was big enough to cause it, more than likely, a scan and ultraound will pick it up. And that’s from my specialist. I had zero symptoms.

Hi! This is super helpful. I went to a breast center and they just said one of my breasts is more fibrocyatic than the other so is a lot more prone to pain. It also went away during my period so the specialist felt it was cyclical. I also did a second ultrasound and can follow up in three months with her.
