    Co Amoxiclav

Hello everyone, I’ve been a member for about 25 years but haven’t been around for some time now. I’m suffering from a UTI and have been give co amoxiclav antibiotics and just wondered if anyone else has had them and if they had any sudden effects. I hate drugs but am usually ok on amoxicillin but these have an added drug and they’re making me feequite strange. Shaky inside, anxious, weird heart feelings and terrible heartburn. Can anyone ease my mind 🙏 thanks all.

    Welcome back,

Co Amoxiclav contains amoxicillin and clavulanic acid which makes it harder for bacteria to build resistance to amoxicillin.
Clavulanic acid is also a fairly potent anti anxiety agent so the shakiness, anxiety and probably anxiety triggered weird heart feelings are rare side-effects. There are several possible explanations for what you're experiencing, including:

    • some have paradoxical reactions to medications and this may be what you're experiencing,

    • anxiety disorders (also depression) are arguably symptoms of an auto-immune disorder and an immune system in overdrive fighting an infection can significantly exacerbate them,

    • an anxious mind is very capable of producing out worst side-effects nightmares if given half a chance.

I don't think these side-effects are signs of physical harm, but if you're finding it hard to cope ask your GP to prescribe an alternative.
