    What does SVT feel like?

    Hi

After being plagued ectopics during my last pregnancy and following several EGGS, event monitors, holters and an echo I was diagnosed with PVCS and PACS.

However, about 18 months ago I started feel a fluttering sensation in my chest and when i checked my pulse it was hammering away. I saw my Dr who knew of my history and said it could have been and SVT and she referred me back to cardiology. Another 24hr holter with one ectopic and the cardiologist said as I was so anxious they'd give me a 7 day monitor. This caught nothing untoward. Fast forward to now and in the last month or so I have started getting much more frequent ectopics and, more disturbingly, this intense fluttery feeling in my chest. I have been very very stressed of late with work, children and two deaths of close relatives in my family so I know that can trigger things but I also seem to get them around my period, etc. So wondering whether hormones may have something to do with it...i am wondering I'm perimenopausal as I'm 42 and have other symptoms of that...

Anyway, I had another scary episode today where I was just sat at my desk watching a video clip and all of a sudden I started getting this huge fluttering in my chest. I immediately jumped up and felt my pulse and it was hammering away really fast. It was regular but very fast. It didn't stop so I did a big cough and it went back to normal. It must have lasted less than 10 seconds but I had a similar episode last month so now I'm really scared.

I just wondered if anyone else gets this and whether it sounds like an SVT?

I can’t really answer your questions about whether it’s SVT, but just wanted to say I will be 42 in May, and also deal with random days of what I assume are ectopic or skipped beats. They do seem worse around my period as well. I’m starting to link them with peri as well.

I've obviously been googling and I'm now utterly terrified I've had a run of VT...feeling so frightened right now. It was a fast regular rythym and when I coughed it stopped. It caused huge fluttery feeling in my chest and what's worried me is that I read on the Internet that VT causes a fluttering sensation

Main advice I can offer here is to step away from the Google LOL. It will 100% absolutely never make you feel better. Turn your focus elsewhere and distract yourself. It’s not easy, but it can be done. Just avoid Google!!

I have just found this thread of yours Honeyskye, I have had EXACTLY the same in recent months. I am older than you, with a lifetime of PACS and PVCS under my belt, but have had exactly the 'jumping up finding my heart going really fast for a few seconds' in the last 12 months. I have read up, as I am perimenopausal, and very late stages of that as it happens, that hormonal changes were indeed a trigger for many women.

I did some reading on SVTs and found out that they often start with an ectopic, and are in the vast majority of cases benign, especially when they stop quick with a cough/vasovagal move. I haven't been to anybody medical about this yet as there has now been a gap of a month since then; it started quickly, lasted seconds and ended with me breathing deeply.

Exact same problems here too. SVT can also be sinus tachycardia, and there's other forms of *VT.

OP are you saying that when you had the 7 day holter monitor you had no changes in your heart rhythm? Or, did it catch them and the cardiologist wasn't concerned about them?

The first situation is a nightmare. Lots of people have a holter and for that entire period their heart doesn't act up

I just wanted to let you know that I also experienced what had the symptoms of an SVT attack but also a panic attack. Coming on to this forum reassured me massively when I was worried. I then also spoke to my doctor To update him and we did go through my diary and realised I’m having terrible days of Ectopics and flutters etc when I ovulate and when it’s my period. He said it’s “Very interesting”, I say it’s proof that hormones do affect it. We discovered the pattern has been happening since I had a baby a year ago.

We also discussed SVTs and VTs as I was scared of them. He explained that VTs do not happen in a ‘normal’ heart, there would be some kind of disease and he also said I would be very unwell with them - as in unconscious or breathless and feeling incredibly ill. Mine do end without going to A&E so he just said he’s not worried about VTs at all.

I hope that helps a little.

I’m currently in the grips of jumping out of my skin and panicking every time my heart does something abnormal. So I can’t say I’m mastered the whole relaxing about it yet!

Have a look at BioCare Megnesium Taurate. I’m starting them this week.

I didn’t think I was stressed but looking back at 2020, had a baby, had an infection that landed me hospital, had covid, lost my job, interviewed for new job, started new job which is more stressful, homeschooling and of course a PANDEMIC in the background the entire year, I probably was actually immensely stressed and had not realised until my body forced me to notice.

    Take care x
I understand this is an anxiety forum and we want to give people reassurance but it should be done without also giving misinformation solely because someone could have a real arrhythmia that needs to be evaluated. VT does not only happen in people with abnormal hearts or heart disease. It’s also not necessarily true that one would be unconscious, breathless etc, some people have runs and don’t even know it. Maybe you doctor told you that to reassure you because you’re not having it? It’s true VT is rare in people with normal hearts and no known heart disease but it can and does happen. I have been getting runs of it and my heart is “normal”. I don’t by any means aim to scare anyone but inaccurate information is dangerous. I would hate for someone to be sitting somewhere with symptoms thinking well my heart is normal so it can’t possibly be dangerous when they should be getting it evaluated.
Any new symptoms should always be checked out. If you suffer from ectopics and your getting something that doesn’t feel like your normal ectopics have your doctor check you over. It’s probably nothing serious but it’s better safe then sorry.
Again my purpose is not to scare anyone, your probably not having runs of VT and even if by some small chance you were in a healthy heart occasional brief runs is not all that concerning.

VT is a fast arrhythmia that comes from the ventricles (bottom part of the heart). There is NSVT (non sustained ventricular tachycardia) which is a VT episode lasting under 30 seconds and then there is just VT which is sustained ventricular tachycardia and sustained means an episode that lasts more then 30 seconds. They aren’t two different arrhythmia’s. They are the same exact arrhythmia the only difference is how long it lasts. VT is a ventricular arrhythmia but not all ventricular arrhythmia’s are VT.

SVT can not also be sinus tachycardia. SVT is a fast arrhythmia that comes from the atrium (top part of your heart) and it’s mostly benign though uncomfortable and sinus tachycardia is a heart rate over 100 but normal rhythm that comes from the sinus node and that’s where all heart beats should come from. Sinus tachycardia is not an arrhythmia it’s a completely normal rhythm it’s just a faster heart rate that correlates to whatever activity your doing at the time or if your anxious etc.
sinus tachycardia can get pretty high. I used to have panic attacks that sent my heart rate into the 180s.

If there is a gradual increase and decrease its sinus tachycardia and I don’t mean gradual in that it takes minutes to get that high but if takes a couple seconds it’s sinus tachycardia. You can tell sinus tachycardia apart from an SVT episode as unlike sinus tachycardia there is no gradual increase or decrease. It starts and stops abruptly like it was and then it wasn’t.

Re: What does SVT feel like?

Careful1 - I don't mean to sound horrible when I say this but, your posts on my thread have scared me out of my wits. I have been coming her for years - not for reassurance or a diagnosis, but to speak to people who suffer with health anxiety and the same symptoms as me. I get there is a lot of misinformation flying around from people and whilst I agree that looking for reassurance from someone with no medical training is dangerous, I think most of us know when to see a Dr instead of listening to someone's own experiences and assuming what they say is fact for everyone. I have had lots of checks with the cardiologist over the last couple of years, lots of tests, etc. and am now waiting to see a cardiologist again. As we are under the NHS here in the UK, I understand our medical system of testing is somewhat different to that in your country. We don't always get access to the services and the particular specialists we wish, we just have to go on waiting lists....we also get given what tests the Dr deems necessary rather than requesting certain tests ourselves, unless we go private.

Even if your heart is classed as structurally and functually normal, there can still be problems with it, i.e. LV function % can be still classed as normal but be less effectively functioning than others. There is also family history of cardiac problems to take into consideration and medication. Symptoms will also feel different for everyone. What's indicative of this is the fact that some people can feel ectopics whilst others can't. Heart rhythm problems are, as you know, an ECG diagnosis and not a clinical one. I really shouldn't have asked what an SVT feels like because what it feels like to one person, can feel completely different to another.

I understand you are also going through a very anxious time right now but your posts here have utterly terrified me and raised my anxiety considerably these last few days.

I don't think thats very fair, considering careful was trying to help based on the questions you have asked, and has her own 'diagnosed' frightening condition which nobody is helping her with. (see her own thread).
