Hardly, P. I have in my collection of magazines some electrical and radio trade magazines from the post-war years.

*That* was austerity - "Fancy a new van for your business, Mr. Brown? Just put your name on this waiting list and hopefully you'll get one in two years' time. The manufacturers might even produce something for you to sell in your shop in the meantime."

Rationing that lasted until the early 1950s, shortages everywhere.

What people think is austerity now is not being able to get that 84" telly on credit this weekend, or having to wait for a Samsung Galaxy S22.

But yes, watching every penny because you don't know when your next job is coming is a pain in the bum.

I know you were P., but there's austerity and then there's real austerity.

This threads turning into the Hovis advert. No university for you boyo, down the pit you go

Forget all the fancy gadgets and think heating. Isn't it wonderful not to have ice on the inside of your windows? Oh and inside toilets...their seats are cold enough as it is.

When I was a child our school used to support people in the East End of London who had virtually nothing. That was real austerity.

But maybe people were more grateful for small comforts then?
