Thread: Breast biopsy (Mom)

    Breast biopsy (Mom)

My mom has to have a breast biopsy on September 9th. She had an ultrasound today, which was a callback from her screening mammogram, and the doctor decided there was a change from last year's mammogram. He described the change as an area of thickening, 1 cm in size. He said that if my mom were younger (she's 72), he would have called it a fibrocystic change and simply watched it, but since she's older, he wants to biopsy it.

Of course, I'm beside myself. Mom had stage 0 DCIS ("pre-cancer") in 2009 in the opposite breast--had a lumpectomy and took Tamoxifen. I'm praying this is another DCIS or else a benign condition like hyperplapsia.

I know many of the women on this forum have had breast biopsies performed. Have any of you been older (like 60+) and received benign results??

My mum did. Like yours it was a call back from a mammogram. She was probably 65 at the time. Hers turned out to be benign. But- even if it turns out not to be benign in your mum’s case it is almost certainly very early stage and BC progresses slower in older women, so it most likely would not involve extensive treatment…….. you have every reason to feel positive.

Oh, thanks for your reply! My mom actually did have a benign finding in the same breast as the DCIS twelve years ago (when she was 60), so I guess it is possible. I take comfort in the fact that the thickened area is too small to be felt by her or her gynae (she had a clinical breast exam in April).

My mom just phoned with good news. Her gynecologist messaged her to say she reviewed the radiology films, and she thinks my mom should cancel the biopsy and instead see a breast specialist she recommends. In the gynae's opinion, the finding is most likely benign thickening and should simply be monitored closely with mammograms and ultrasounds. She's forwarding the radiology report to the breast specialist, and my mom is now about to get an appointment with him for next week.

Also, they found she has the antibodies for Covid 19 (she's also been vaccinated), so she's out of danger so far as that's concerned.

If the specialist does need to do the biopsy, he can just do it right there in his office.

We're pretty relieved, because we both felt the whole biopsy plan was just thrust on my mom yesterday with no warning. I'm glad she's getting a second opinion.

    Re: Breast biopsy (Mom)

So my mom got an appointment with the breast specialist/surgeon for October 5th. It was the earliest date she could get, as her referral was non-urgent.

I guess my fear now is that there will be some huge change between now and Oct. 5th.

On the other hand, I asked her what the radiologist actually said last week. Apparently, he never mentioned the word "cancer" but just said there was a "concerning change from last year's mammogram" and that he would rather biopsy it. The change he described as LESS than 1 centimeter of thickened breast tissue in the lower part of her right breast.

My mom cannot feel any thickening anywhere in her breast or under her arm.

Based on the radiologist's report, my mom's gynegologist thought the immediate biopsy was overkill and wanted her to go to an actual breast center for a second opinion (she has her mammograms done at a general radiology center, not a breast center). She had a 3D mammogram (and has done for the past four years), and I've heard these can pick up all kinds of "issues" that are tiny. So I hope that if the tissue is cancerous, it is not aggressively so.

    Re: Breast biopsy (Mom)

So my mom saw the breast surgeon this morning. He did a clinical breast exam/lymph node exam, which was normal. He reviewed her mammogram/ultrasound films and confirmed there is a change in the breast tissue but that the area is not hard or growing; it's neither a tumor nor a lump. He does want her to get a biopsy to be safe. He told her the lesion appears confined to the milk duct so that if it is malignant, then it would be another "in situ" breast cancer.

I'm mildly relieved, but I do wish he could have just done the biopsy today. On the other hand, I'm trying to tell myself that his not doing it today or tomorrow is a sign that he doesn't think the situation is urgent.

My mom had her needle biopsy this morning. The doctor who did the biopsy said it would take a week to get the results.😒

She's already seen the breast surgeon, and he thinks that if the area is malignant then it's another pre-cancer (DCIS), like she had 12 years ago. I'm still nervous, of course, but we're both glad the biopsy's done.
