    Why is masturbation still controversial?

I completely understand that this is a highly emotive and thorny topic, and there are always times and places for said activity to be practiced, but why do many still get prudish and hung up over masturbation, especially in these more enlightened times?

There are sadly many who still consider it an extremely disgusting and depraved activity, even when done in private, plus there have even been cases of parents disowning their children for indulging in such practices over the years, especially in some religious circles.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not intending to cause offence to anyone in any way but it's an issue that's been bugging me for donkeys years, and I often feel that certain people's views are not only outdated but extremely unjust in many instances, especially where said activity is indulged in both appropriately and legitimately.

Masturbation is as natural as breathing Lenco. I think what makes the difference is how we feel about doing it and whether we've been made to feel guilty for doing so. I've read so many 'Agony Aunt' columns since my early teens where people feel an overwhelming sense of guilt. I could identify and for me personally, my sense of guilt came via my parents and more particularly my Mum.

Sex was never discussed, only hinted at and if addressed the tone was one of disapproval. This I think was passed down from her own parents, so I lived in dread of her finding my stash of magazines under my mattress!! Even to this day I find it hard to shake off that feeling of doing something 'dirty', and this from a married man with a 22 year old daughter. And if you're wondering why a married man needs a five knuckle shuffle when he has a wife, 26 years can make the novelty of 'marital bliss' wear off, believe me.

I hope this helps, though I've probably revealed more about myself than anything else

It seems that children (especially boys) 'playing' with themselves has always been a taboo subject ever since humanity has existed, and even (unjustly IMO) been likened to a serious 'status offence' in some circles.

Sex education in schools still prevails as an extremely thorny and divisive issue even today. Little wonder so many kids feel confused, especially by the time they end up being led astray by some promiscuous/perverted 'know-it-all' on social media!

What causes you more anxiety? COVID stats, the past social unrest or the five knuckle shuffle?

Mainly the first two, but it's the unjust ways certain people, especially children, have been treated for innocently (and mostly appropriately) indulging in the latter when and where no harm was intended.

Again, concerning yourself about the way people react to certain issues and subjects (unless this was personal issue for you) as well as dwelling on statistics and past events will only exhasberate your own anxiety over things you cannot control and this is a theme with your threads. Thing is, you actually have control over that. You don't have to read or watch.

I laughed at Fishman's post because my own masturbation journey started with finding my dad's collection of 1970's porn under the bed. (I was looking for my Christmas presents at the time)

I'm still at it aged 51 (masturbating, not looking for my Christmas presents) and I hope I always will be. People masturbate. It's normal and natural!

I can't speak for blokes but from a woman's perspective - there are times when I can't be doing with all the sex shit and having to contort oneself into all kinds of impossible positions and still try to look semi-alluring. Sometimes ya just want a quick strum on the ol' banjo and not have to pray that your husband doesn't fart while your nose is in close proximity to his @arse, you get me?

What they need is a damn good self-seeing to.
