The X-Factor was a vehicle for production-line, manufactured pop. Music by numbers, packaged smartly and sold by the ton to impressionable youngsters with Mr Cowell et al laughing all the way to the bank. He knew this, he knew that we knew this but still we kept watching with morbid fascination.
