    Advice needed: throat/esophagus/abdomen worries!

    Hi all,

I'm 47 and have been a HA sufferer for years. My current (serious) worry is esophageal cancer. I've been taking Omeprazole (40 mg) for a couple of years (2016) now for heartburn issues, but lately it's been playing up again (burping, hiccups, feeling a bit queasy after meals, feeling crumbs in throat after eating). I've been reading a bit about Omeprazole and I've found that 40 mg is pretty much the maximum daily dosage. Then why on earth isn't it helping anymore, at least right now? Could this be related to my current anxiety? (of course, I hear you say...). Also intermittent lump in throat/globus sensation, which is new to me and freaks me out and abdominal aches (mainly in the lower right abdomen) which are not new, but do worry me.

Thanks to therapy I'm just about OK mentally most of the time, but on several times during the day I'm convinced that my body's riddled with cancer and the panic is almost overwhelming. Further intermittent symptoms: crampy feeling around the bellybutton, aches under the right jawline, foul taste in mouth.

I haven't (yet) been to the GP this time around, but fear that I will have to in order to break this "cycle". But on the other hand, surely I can't have throat cancer, esophageal cancer and bowel cancer all at once? Anyone who can relate or put my mind to rest a bit? Thanks!

Have you looked into the FODMAP diet? PPIs alone can help but diet is vital to controlling reflux. The wife and I take a PPI (Pantoprazole) and follow the FODMAP diet. Other than an occasional breakthrough (when we eat something we probably shouldn't have ), we've been good. We also keep a bottle of antiacid around just in case.

Forgot to add another symptom: ache in right side of neck (sometimes).

I'm on lansoprazole which I felt worked much better than omeprazole. At times though if my anxiety is high my digestive system takes a bit of a hit (well not a bit really, quite a lot) and usually takes a while to settle down, even after I have.

Looking at what you eat is a good idea and some foods are worse than others. I love fresh orange juice, but it's unfortunately too much for my sensitive insides and I can only stomach a few mouthfuls.

But still: all these symptoms and aches, I feel miserable. Should/could this all be ascribed to reflux? I worry because no doctor has ever looked "inside" to determine the exact problem. I was given Omeprazole 5 years ago by a specialist doctor with the assurance that I did NOT have cancer. The Omeprazole helped, and I'm still here so they were right that time. But now, as the reflux seems to be "breaking through" the medicine I'm very anxious that something more sinister is at play. And of course I dread going to the GP...

Have you looked at the FODMAP diet yet? Read it, keep a list of foods you eat and your reaction, reduce/eliminate those foods and avoid the foods on the 'bad' list. Take your PPI and/or speak to your doctor about a stronger one. I told you about breakthrough reflux and that's why we keep some antiacid around. Also, 'when' and how much you eat comes into play as well.
