Viral mouth ulcers - dosage of Aciclovir?

    Hi, all

Don't know if any of you have had viral mouth ulcers before? Anyway I had them really bad ten years ago inside mouth on both sides. Got them again now on the one side (inner cheek, where wisdom teeth are).

Doc prescribed me 800mg of Aciclovir tablets to be taken 5 times a day - does that seem too much? It seems more like the dosage for shingles or something.

Please advise. And let me know if you've experienced viral mouth ulcers before please!

    Thanks

Seems to be a not unreasonable acyclovir dose for adult herpetic stomatitis/herpetic gingivostomatitis type ulcers. Is it causing side-effects?

Not really - just felt a bit sick after first tablet. Thanks for your response - that reassured me that it wasn't the wrong dosage.

Because of the way it works even overdoses are unlikely to do anything.

Firstly acyclovir has low bioavailability with only about 50% of the drug making it into the bloodstream The other half ends up down the 'S' bend. Acyclovir itself is a prodrug, that is it isn't active itself, one of its metabolites does the work and it isn't metabolised in normal cells, only in those which have active viruses as they makes the enzyme which converts it to an intermediary metabolite which in turn is metabolised to the active chemical. The virus itself makes the means of its demise. Plus, acyclovir has a very short half-life, 2-3 hours so it is out of the system in 10-15 hours from the last taken dose.
