It works by blocking beta-adrenergic receptors which diminishes the adrenaline, aka epinephrine, fueled symptoms of an anxiety/panic attack. The most common side-effect is tiredness.

Thank you, I'm supposed to take my first pill in a few hours and I am sick with panic over it. I'm scared I'm going to have a bad reaction and need to go to the hospital

10mg propranolol is probably less likely to harm you than a sugar pill.
