    Hurt cat, rabies?

I've posted before about my fear of rabies. My moms cat was attacked by 2 dogs. I guess they lived down the road. I went over to help and I did pet the cat on her head and wrapped her in a towel. My after thought was the saliva on her from the dogs. I'm freaking our because my kids were over there too. My mom said the dogs looked healthy. In my anxiety brain I want to get me and my kids rabies shots to be safe. I made sure to wash my hands well after I pet the cat. Nobody else seems to be worried about possible rabies exposure. Fyi, the cat ended up passing from her injuries.

I'm struggling so bad with this. I feel like it's on every surface I touch and I want to bleach everything I own. Even the car I drove in after I touched the cat.

    Re: Hurt cat, rabies?

I’m sorry about your cat. I would have said it would be useful to get their shot records from animal control (for your cat’s sake) but as your cat has passed it won’t matter much and I’m not sure you can request them if you weren’t bitten yourself.

That said, the reason you won’t get them is because there isn’t any risk to you or your kids based on what you describe. The dogs are likely healthy anyway, and you need an injury to contract rabies, skin contact isn’t enough.

You will be okay, but please keep a look out for the dogs in the future. Not all dogs who harm cats are dangerous to humans, but better safe than sorry.

My biggest worry is it being on a surface that a kid touched and them putting their hanf in their mouth I know the virus is fragile but it happened fast and I just can't help but thinking about the what ifs.
