Does testing still show COVID?

We're ill here and one person tested at the start of a "cold" and then about 4 days in and it still shows negative. I've just started with a sore throat and tested but shows negative so I'm wondering do new variants still show up?

They do. Our local major hospital still tests and are still getting positives.

I think so, I've been feeling grotty all week, I think there's a lot going around.
