Breast lump and clinic referral

Hi, Im 45 and found a breast lump on Sunday… went to the GP yesterday (Monday) they found the lump, said they couldn’t feel and swelling in lymph nodes etc and have referred me to the breast clinic, got my appointment that day for Monday 4th November…. I am totally freaking out, I can’t settle, can barely function due to fear and anxiety. I’m convinced it’s cancer, petrified I won’t be able to deal with that news and how I go on from there, I’m in a spiral and just can’t stop. I know no one can really help and I just have to wait for the appointment but any advice or comments from people who have been through this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Hi! From what I understand from reading through this site for a long time, most women in the UK are referred to the breast clinic if they find a bump. I’m in Canada and twice I’ve been referred for an ultrasound and both times were benign and nothing to be worried about. Most lumps (more than 80%) are nothing to be concerned about.

I know it’s hard to wait (and believe me I’m always in a BC spiral) but you should be so proud of yourself for taking quick action. You’ll get an answer next week so try as much as you can to do some things to distract yourself.

Thank you, honestly my head is literally a mess I keep thinking all the worse things. The biopsy still isn’t back yet but I’ve had a letter through to say they think it could be a fibroadenoma but we need to have biopsy results to be sure. I’ve got an appointment 6th November for my telephone call for my results and I feel so ill about answering the call already!
