A LOT of blood in urine, really scared

I am a 48 year old female, just for reference. Yesterday I noticed quite a bit of blood when peeing. Also burning. Usually with the burning, I would say okay, UTI, no big deal, BUT I have NEVER had bleeding before with a UTI. So I went to the ER (it was late at night). They asked for a urine sample there and it was SO dark, like the color of merlot. A short time later, when I was peeing AGAIN, there were tiny little blood clots as well. The ER doc decided it must be cystitis caused by a UTI and sent me on my way with a prescription for an antibiotic.

Here are my fears: some of the markers that would indicate UTI on the urinalysis are negative. There is only TRACE bacteria, hardly any at all. The protein is high, the leukocyte is high, the WBC is high(ish). That's about it. They didn't do any blood work, any scans, seemed like they were just trying to call it a day. And the sheer amount of blood that was in that cup is terrifying to me. Obviously NOT normal. I do have an appointment with a urologist next week once i am done with the antibiotic, but in the meantime, I can't help but freak out. I have researched (because haven't we all) and I know that bladder cancer can be rather slow moving, as long as it's caught on time. Or maybe kidney disease. Just seems like more than just a UTI. That blood was just too much. I can't tell if I still have blood, when I was in the ER, they gave me a pill to help ease the burning, but it turns your pee orange. I'm just really, really scared at the moment.

It could be kidney stones. I had blood in my urine and that was the cause.

My response didn't go through for some reason. Did you have a LOT of blood? This was seriously the color of dark red wine when I went in their cup. Wouldn't kidney stones causing that much bleeding also cause a lot of pain? I don't really have any pain (other than the burning, which is subsiding now thanks to the antibiotic). I was just so taken aback by the darkness of it, it was a lot.

No it wasn't that much but everyone is different.

I agree, it could be kidney stones. My mom just had a couple (or one large one) that she had to have dealt with. I think her urine was dark, not quite that dark but I didn't see it firsthand; they actually initially discovered it on an MRI as she'd had some back pain they were checking out. I know passing the kidney stones was really painful, but while she actually had one she didn't know that's what it was - she had back pain, but she's older and has some arthritis and didn't notice it was any different from that. However, I think she said after passing the stone her back pain is less intense.

Right now, my urine is pretty much back to normal color and frequency but I know that serious and not so serious can be intermittent and it was just so dark that it doesn’t make me feel any better. I wish I could see urologist sooner. They were going to get me in today but then they realized I had antibiotics from the hospital so they want to wait until I am done with those (some of the meds can skew urine tests a bit). I’m just so worried.

I know, and I really hope that is what it is. My concern with that is that level of blood but no kidney stone type pain. I've never had one (that i know of), so all I know is the people I know that have, had a lot of pain.
