    Afraid of colon cancer

Hi! I’m new to this forum and please tell me if I’am doing something wrong. And also, excuse my bad English.

So, I’m 44 years old have been suffering from health anxiety on and off for more than 20 years.

So, now to my problem which is something I battle with on a daily basis. The fear of colon cancer.

Last year my mom (80 years old) got diagnosed with colon cancer. So did her brother (77 years old). But they are a big family and are 2 out of 11 siblings. So they both got treated and everything looks fine for now. The doctors looked for genetic colon cancer and familial cancer but there wasn’t anything there. Which of course is good!

But since then I have been very aware of the fact that I run a higher risk of getting colon cancer since my mom had it. And I have been doing all sorts of research to try to minimize it. First of all I have to tell you that you can’t get screening in Sweden in my age unless there is a clear indication that you have hereditary cancer. If nothing changes I will be able to get my stool analysed for blood when I’m 60. Otherwise I have to pay for it myself if I want to and it’s costly to say the least.

I have been exercising more, eating better, keeping tabs on my poop and any changes, I have started taking aspirin from time to time (which supposedly can lower your risk for colon cancer), taking d- vitamin and calcium supplements etc.

But meat and processed meat have been such a struggle for me to cut down on. I know the recommendations are about 500g of meat per week and that very little should be from processed meats. And maybe even less for me that have a parent that had colon cancer.

So, I’m not sure I have a question or anything but I just needed to get it out of my system and maybe if someone else are having these ”problems” as well.

    Re: Afraid of colon cancer

Statistics can help my health my anxiety sometimes but I can’t get my head around how I should think when it comes to red meat and especially processed meat. I know my risk of getting colon cancer is somewhat heightened due to my mom having it. I also know the recommended intake of processed meat is 70 gram per day. Does that mean I skip altogether? Cut that amount in half? The same amount?

I also know this isn’t logical thinking but when the HA kicks in it’s always nice to discuss with other in the same boat.
