    Discharge - panic

    Hello,
For over a year now I’ve had a wet feeling in my right nipple. I just always sort of assumed it was psychosomatic due to health anxiety. The last three weeks I’ve been fixated on it and on nipple discharge. I have been touching and occasionally squeezing my nipples, and of course, the other day clear and white liquid came out of one. I ran to the doctor who said she wasn’t concerned and did bloodwork for thyroid and prolactin, which were normal. She didn’t put in for an ultrasound (I’m in the US). She said to use ice and NSAIDS. I’m freaking out because she barely touched me. I can still get a little bit of liquid when I squeeze the last two days but not as much as the first day. I’m a total wreck and so scared something is wrong and I don’t know what to do. Not sure why I’m making this post was just hoping to get it out.

She didn't order a mammogram? You could have made something irritated if you are squeezing your nipples a lot. Stop squeezing and messing with them and do what she says, if you're that worried then go get a mammogram done.

    Re: Discharge - panic

Hello, I felt moved to reply to your post because last year I had burning pain in my right breast and yellow discharge. It had been over 18 months since I had stopped nursing so it totally freaked me out! My PCP ordered a mammogram (my first, I’ve just turned 36) and I had both mammogram and US at the breast clinic. The mammogram didn’t show anything concerning and nor did the US — I’d actually pulled a muscle in my chest and the pain was radiating into my breast. ANYWAY all this to say, the specialist who reviewed all my tests and spoke to me said that it’s actually pretty normal for women (lactating or not, any age) to be able to get some discharge out of their breast if they squeeze hard enough. Please, please don’t squeeze - I know it’s really hard but you’ll feel bruised and sore and it will feed your worries. If you feel the need to have a mammogram push for it, through your OB or PCP, but I’d suggest trying to leave it alone and follow her advice as a first line of defence. Sending you a hug.
