Site taking ages to load pages...

Hi, I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this but the Site is taking ages to load pages. Not all the time, it comes and goes. It's been happening quite a bit lately.

Yup we are being hammered by spammers and the likes of the "big" sites that are collecting AI data. Alex does his best to keep on top of it but it is a constant battle to ban IP addresses etc.

Spammers mostly tend to attempt infiltration of popular websites that get good viewing figures (not much point in spamming a website that has few or no views). So, NMP can take the spammers’ unwelcome and annoying attention as a sort of compliment.

Same subject: I’ve noticed for some time now that the “Viewing” and “Currently Active Users” numbers often bear no relation to the actual number of folks looking in. Sometimes there are comparatively large numbers shown to be viewing, but inside the various sub-topics and threads there are perhaps just one or two browsing. I assume these inflated figures are caused by the very fleeting visits of crawler bots, spiders and (often malicious) scrapers, which scour and scavenge the website for anything that might be useful for search-indexing, marketing/targeting/spamming etcetera, etcetera.

One way (among many) of reducing non-human intrusive behaviour might be to use a “CAPTCHA” plugin, of which I believe there are several free versions that work with WordPress...?
