hi im new here to
I think the avatars are funny and are not about putting them selves down, i think its just a bit of humour, my best friend and i always call each other ya nutter or oh well you cant help it your crackers, i think that's better than being stiff about it.
i use to hate meeting new people as they would always say oh and what do you do?
so id sit there thinking what do i say?
i don't work?
nope cos they will think I'm lazy.
i cant work as i have agoraphobia?
and then have to explain it.
all the time I'm thinking through this stuff my heart is pounding and I'm getting more and more stressed so what i say now is when they say what do you do?
i say nothing cos I'm crackers and then smile, this puts them on shaky ground so they don't ask anymore and i don't panic, job done
i think its just how someone thinks about there problems or how they deal with them and like me some deal with it with humor.

Welcome to the Forum.
I hope you benefit as much from the advice and support available here as I have.
I do understand your point.I would say that people coming here are often very fragile and perhaps have based their names/avatars on how they are feeling.Maybe,as they progress,these become reminders to them of the advances which they have made.
We are indeed fortunate to have personal choice in these matters.

I do understand what you are saying and you do have a point.

I think there are two possible reasons for people to use either usernames or avatars that are negative such as 'mad', 'crazy',etc. Either it's a way to lighten the emotional load a little. After all, having anxiety, panic, PTSD, etc. really can put a person in a negative space! I used to use the signature 'if the world didn't suck, we'd all fall off' .
It wasn't that I hated living or was bitter, I was trying to add a little humor to a less than humorous situation.
Or it could be where one feels they are at the moment. Such as 'lost' or 'confused' or 'scared'.
I do believe that if you can think positively that it does help one's situation but in some circumstances it's nearly impossible to think positively.
Sometimes expressing what one is feeling is a step in the right direction toward working out those feelings
