Help! Lump in my throat and popping tongue

This must sound like a strange complaint, but sometimes when I swallow it actually feels like I'm swallowing my tongue, then it pops back, almost like there was a bubble IN the back of my tongue. I could also describe it as a clicking feeling in the throat/back of my tongue when I swallow. It doesn't happen all the time, just once or twice a day, and sometimes it's hard to swallow even when I don't get the 'tongue swallowing' sensation.
I'm really terrified it might be a tumour or something in my throat.

Just for the record, I know it's not possible to swallow your tongue. It just feels like it's going down my throat when I swallow then it pops. I can't get a doctor's appointment untill July 15th!! :(

Godd news is you can't swallow your tounge as some people would lead you to believe.

Also complaints about strange tounge sensations and feelings seem to be one on the MOST common complaints with HA.

I have to be honest I don't think I have ever herd of a tumor or growth in the tounge let alone a cancerous one, unless you have been smoking 30+ cigs a day for 40 years and then it wouldn't produce those kind of symptoms.

With health Anxiety you tend to have irrational thoughts, also your brain is over stimulated with adrenaline, cortisone and many other chemicals so you notice things more... things which a body can do off and on that normal people would not notice at all.

Also you could be doing it and not knowing it, your tounge is a muscle.

No, problem here but if it worries you more than normal and other body sensations as well you should see your Dr and try therapy or medication.

It did wonders for me, good luck

    Hi Joyce,
thank you. I'm more concerned that it might be cancer of the throat or mouth actually, I've got very swollen glands and apart from the 'tongue popping' feeling also a bit of difficulty swallowing. I have ME which is often responsible for giving me swollen glands, but that's the problem, sometimes a lot of things can just be put down to the ME and I'm worried doctors might miss something deadly by doing that..

I'm sorry to hear you suffer from ME

As far as I know you can get sore throats and muscle fasciculations with me.

Your toung can twitch and jerk as it is a muscle, most of the time it's brought on by anxiety, now saying that, anxiety is also a symptom of me....... you might want to talk to your Dr and tell him your fear me will cover up another illness and that you don't want it to be missed.

I went on medication (paroxetine) and within 4 months my "so very real symptoms" went away!

Drs don't wan't to get sued..... but it will make you feel better I think if you tell your Dr EXACTLY how you feel.

I understand what you are saying, but ill bet you are totally appart from me.

    Hope this helps you

Re: Help! Lump in my throat and popping tongue

    Hi there

I get a very similar sensation maybe even the same. I call it crunching in the throat. Like you it only happens occasionally but usually at some point each day. I have also had the classic lump in throat thing but I have managed to control my panic over that. My glands and neck ache quite a lot. At the moment I have just been diagnosed with an inflammatory arthritis and apparently throat problems can be associated with that. It could easily be a result of ME or just anxiety related. I would have a word like joyce suggested when you see your gp and explain how uncomfortable and worrying this is. I'm going to mention mine when I see the consultant at the end of the month. Good luck and I hope it soon passes or at least you find that it is nothing to worry about.

Hi, an update. I haven't been on this forum in over a year and I had a baby in June

I still have the throat thing. I can describe it better now. It's like a tiny muscle between my ear and my throat that moves down when I swallow and gets stuck, then pops out again. The doctor wants me to see a specialist and have a camera put up my nose but I declined.
