    thyroid?

Hi, I am female and 58. I've had epilepsy most of my life. It disappeared when my periods began but returned after the birth of my second baby. It seemed to be pre-period so my doc., arranged for me to go to a another doc., who tested me and also injected me monthly so I had no fits but on 6th month i dropped, so he said i would be better having a hysterectomy with all removed. I still have fits but alot different, no sleep needed after etc., Just recently my throat is sore and top of chest and I was wondering if it might be thyroid because when the neurologist heard that my family have it, mother, father, sister and others he had a test done which turned out that I didn't have it but that's a long time ago, so could it be thyroid now?

    Re: thyroid?

i had one doctor at the ER tell me that if i had a test 6 months ago then most likely there's no thyroid problem. but then i had my gp tell me that thyroid issues can develop in just a few months, so he tested me and all was good. it runs in my family too so i opted to get tested.

it's no biggie to have a test done.

    Hi Dandygirl

I had overactive thyroid which was treated and now my thyroid is underactive and I'm on Thyroxine.

A sore throat and chest aren't the main symptoms of either and if you've been tested you are probably all right. You could ask your doctor for a re-test just to reassure you.

    Hi,

I also have Hypothyroidism, and I too have been told that results only show by roughly 6 months, usually longer.

If you haven't had a test for the last six months, it maybe worth checking.

Having a sore throat, well..I haven't been aware of this myself (though, others maybe different), also depending on whether your symptoms could be caused by Hyperthyroidism instead. I just know this by my experience and they were different. I'm now taking Thyroxine for Underactive.

I hope though, your Thyroid is balanced because it can sometimes be a nightmare to try and balance things out.

Wishing you well and hope things get sorted.

I had to go in for a Thyroid panel this morning....its just a blood test, had to fast for at least 12 hours before, then it only took five minutes...I have to pay over 100 dollars for it, but if it figures out what is wrong with me it will be worth it...

    Hi Dandygirl,
I've had an underactive thyroid and low adrenal reserve for about 14 years. Do your temperature in bed in the morning whilst you are still laying down. put the thermometer under your armpit for 10 mins. Take a reading if it's below 97.8 you still may have a thyroid problem even though the blood test shows otherwise! The blood tests aren't always helpful as the blood test ranges are far too wide, and now they have just made them even wider! Imagine a ruler and you have a blood test and it comes back with a result that you are 4 inches within the ruler, but you may have started life with 11 inches! Does that make any sense? None of us want to have this problem, but it could be an answer to lots of the problems that you've been having. The sore throat and chest could be thyroiditis an infection or just your thyroid trying too hard to keep up! Has your voice changed at all? Is it croaky or hoarse? I have run a thyroid helpline for a Thyroid specialist in Surrey for a long time now and his approach is completely different.
I hope that this helps and has'nt made you worry even more! Thyroid problems are soooooo common and easily treated.

    Take care
    Elaine
