Thank you for this article Nicola.

I am quite sure there are many other people out there who suffer from PTSD but they have been diagnosed with depression without anyone taking the time to talk to them. It's about time that the mental health services in the UK had a shake up & realised that if we had a better service we would recover quicker & reduce the waiting lists.

I wish I had known about the Maudsley Hospital, when i was diagnosed my GP advised me to seek private treatment as the waiting list for the mental health team was 6mth the n another 6mths till i would have therapy. Not wanting to lose my family, job, house & probably my life I went into private therapy. It has been a tough journey but one I have no regrets over, despite the cost of nearly £10,000! I am now in recovery & life feels good again.

Hi Lindi, just wanted to express my disgust at the way vets are discarded and abandoned by societies and governments once they've outlived their usefulness :( I think there's a certain amount of naivety on the part of those who choose to fight for their country... I think very often the reality of war can destroy even the strongest man or woman...

    Hi Kibbutz83

Life and circumstances can destroy the strongest woman or man, that is a very generalised statement, PTSD doesn't just affect vets? There is a large section of society that are abandoned by society and government once they have outlived their percieved usefulness.

I have had the diagnosis of PTSD now for many years now but my journey to recovery has been mainly alone with the support of my internet friends and close family.

Can PTSD be delayed? For example can one's reaction to a traumatic event manifest itself years after the event?

    Thanks

It is considered delayed anytime after 6 months
We tend to bottle things up when they are that shocking, and it depends on how long it takes to start trying to knaw it's way out.

    Thank you for this article.
I have a Complex PTSD diagnosis: The article suggests I need to go to a specialist unit for therapy as it relates to sexualised violence, emotional abuse and severe control by a carer. But how do you access the appropriate help? It takes years of repeating that you are not depressed and something else is going on, but what's on offer appears to be antidepressant tablets, mountains of them.

I am now approaching 50, I have been asking for psychological help since I was 10, when I first became suicidal. I have just received 6 months of weekly therapy but within the normal adult mental health system. How as a patient are we supposed to assess what treatment we are receiving? I have no idea if I had CBT or whatever. How do I know if the therapist was appropriately qualified? I don't feel I've benefited. Talking about the childhood stuff made me more suicidal? Is that a good thing? Does that mean I'll get better now?

From my perspective there is a chasm between the professionals and the patients which the professionals protect using exclusionary language and a timely lack of eye contact.

Maybe I'll go and wander through a war zone then I can access some war vet charities help.
