Got a feeling i'm being sectioned?

    Hi,
To cut a long story short.I've been an in patient at the Priory and my Bupa funding ran out but still go as an "out patient|.I went down hill a couple of days ago because one of the patients committed suicide and it's tormented me since EG: what if i did it...etc...etc.
Went to A and E and told them how i was feeling and referred me to the Crisis Intervention Team and they saw me today. Two of them came round to my house and at the end of the assessment said that they need a second opinion from another psychiatrist and my consultant at the priory has been speaking to them as well.
I've been looking up the reasons why on the internet and it says they do this if you are going to be sectioned under the mental health act???
If i was sectioned i wonder if they would send me to the priory because i'm having out patient treatment there?
They are being very hush, hush about it and wondering what's going on.I have to see them tomorrow morning at 10.00am again??
Wonder if it's me just blowing everything out of proportion or not?

    Hi Wombat,

I really can't say as I don't know your healthcare system that well but wanted you to know that I am thinking of you and know that you will be especially in my thoughts tomorrow morning. I do hope that the best thing for you happens and you feel better soon.

    Take care,

    Laura

    Thanks Laura,
Can't sleep at the moment worrying about it all.Wish i could just switch off but will have to get to grips with everything.I don't want my family to know because they worry and it just makes me feel worse.
I know through experience before when they know i've been off sick from work and it doesn't make me feel better.
    Thanks again,
    Wombat.

Wombat sounds like you are having a real distressing time right now. I know when I have had severe anxiety I take on other people's situations and get into the what if's of if I do that too. Once out of the anxiety state I am then able to rationalise it. Anxiety sucks doesn't it???

To be sectioned under the Mental Health Act they have to feel that you are of serious threat to yourself. They will do risk assessments. For example, have you made any serious threats? Do you have a suicide planned out?

I don't know what problems you are having so I can't really comment, but I hope everything will be ok for you. Big hugsxxx

Wombat, I know it seems scary, but I do believe if they intended to section you, they would have done it at the time. I have been in danger of getting sectioned before but only if I hadn't agreed to go into hospital voluntarily. If they thought your mental state was reason enough to hospitalise you, they would give you the option of going in as a voluntery patient.
Sections aren't given out that often. They really are for crises times where you are a real threat to yourself or others.
I have also had a psychiatrist phone another psychiatrist and it was all very hush hush too. She went out to her car to make the call. What she had been calling for was to ask an opinion on whether or not I should be hospitalised, the other doctor agreed. However, although I agreed to go to the hospital, once I got there I wouldn't stay. I wasn't sectioned. I don't know if I would have been if my own doc turned up and had a chat with me and reassured himself that I wasn't going to go out and commit suicide.
In your case, maybe the other doctor didn't agree you needed hospitalisation.
If you feel you need hospital. If you feel you are a danger to yourself or others, then you have to tell your crises team. I don't think they would put you in the priory though.

    Hi Wombat

Sorry to hear you are having such a bad time at the moment.

I agree with Happyone - if any of the psychiatric or medical team you are seeing was considering sectioning you they would only do so if they carried out a formal assessment under the Mental Health Act and asked you to go to hospital voluntarily and if you refused. At the assessment they would have to be a psychiatrist, a medical doctor and an approved social worker.

This is all very scary and worrying I am sure but it sounds like they are just concerned and want to make sure you can cope and are safe at home. I had 3 Mental Health Act assessments last year when I was very ill with my anorexia and avoided being sectioned because I agreed to go into hospital voluntarily. They can't section you without giving you the chance to decide to go in voluntarily even if they think you are at risk. It takes a lot to section someone.

If you were admitted unfortunately it probably wouldn't be to The Priory unless there are no NHS mental health specialist treatment facilities in your area. I was admitted to a medical ward of the local hospital for 2 weeks and then transferred to an eating disorder unit miles from home as there are no services here.

I hope the out patient services of The Priory and the support of your local services can see you through this rough time.

    Karen
