    Safety blanket...

I'm recovering from agoraphobia at the moment and am still very restricted as to what I can do and where I can go but everytime I do leave the house I HAVE to have a bottle of water with me. I started taking it along for practical reasons...when I felt the start of a panic attack come on it helped a bit to sip water. I always have it in my hand rather than in my bag, I think now it's just holding it that helps! If I go out without it, I freak out and have to come back straight away...it's like my safety blanket lol. Sounds a bit odd really, does anyone else do something similar? xxx

    Hi Baby Doll

It doesn't sound odd at all. I have to have my house keys in my hand all the time, that way I know that I'm not far away from my home (I only go to the local shop a couple of times a week).

I'm sure everyone has something that they take with them when they go out for security.

Even when I worked, I used to carry around with me a huge bag full of claire weekes books & tapes, puzzles books, the Bible etc, t'was soooooooo heavy, lol. But hey, you gotta do whatcha gotta do to get through it, right?

A bottle of water doesn't sound weird at all Baby, I don't leave the house without a jar of cayenne pepper in my pocket, in case I have a heart attack! Now that's weird, beat that if you can, lol. Don't beat yourself up about it, if it works for you.... keep sipping!

Panic attacks started in 1992. 1998 i became agoraphobic which lead into being room bound. Couldn't even get upstairs. 2002 i started getting better, able to drive and work. 2005 i became house bound again. 2009 i have been making SLOW progress, still not able to go anywhere alone, but my journeys are getting longer. No where near 'normal' but at least i can go out.

    Hi

You are definitely not weird. I can really relate to what you are saying but I carry sooo much more than a bottle of water. Loads of people carry water, as we are all being told how important drimking it is. I carry a whole bag of stuff with me. I can really relate Belle, I'm just like you!!!!

Diazepam for unbearable emergencies ( never take it)
Rescue remedy, bottle but at least 1 full and 1 half bottle in case I run out
Water or juice of some sort
    Mp3 player
    Crossword
    Leaflets about panic from NHS
Notebook and pen cos writing stuff down helps
    Banana
    Mints which I'm addicted to
Mobile phone, which always has to have credit
    Lavender oil to sniff
    Headache tablets
Mirror so I can check out my face as I go really blotchy

When I go anywhere withou my car, ie if someone picks me up I feel really anxious, so I should put my car on the list too!!!

Yes what does the cayenne do???? Should I be carrying that too???lol

Hey Belle, cayenne pepper can stop certain heart attacks in 30 seconds ( Dr Christopher), put it into google and check it out for yourself. I take it every day mixed with orange juice, and never leave the house without it!..... just in case. x

im the same i need to have my car with me or at least have access to it, i very rarely let someone else drive if i go more than about 20 miles away, and at the mo im also carrying eye drops (been getting dry eyes) and a paper bag, not that i've had to use one for about 3 years just makes me feel safer.

Me too, I have a handbag full of ' safety- distraction' things, including phone and notepad and pen, usually enough stuff to warrent frequent trips into my bag if I feel panicky and try to distract myself.
