getting to sleep without a sleeping pill?????

I am feeling fairly depressed and strung out and anxious at the moment.

I took a Zopiclone (US equiv Ambien?) last night, I have them for such a *moment*. They work a treat....

However, I would prefer to be able to sleep naturally, through the night...have never been able to.
When I first started on Efexor, it helped, but now it makes no difference. I wake up every few hours, and if I wake up like at 4 am I don't usually get to sleep properly again on work mornings.

Does anyone have any tips/suggestions/thoughts?

I've been having a nightmare sleeping and am usually quite cynical about foods having an effect but pasta and mash potato not only helped with sleep but it also calmed me down a little.
