    Endoscopy

    Hi all

After 3 months of suffering with lump/object in the throat, reflux, gerd type stuff (http://www.nomorepanic.co.uk/showthr...d=1#post500752) I will be going for my Endoscopy next Tuesday. I would class myself as a VERY nervous person and am just dreading the procedure (as if waiting for the results wasn't bad enough!). I know we all experience things differently so I don't expect anyone to reply and say it is a hoot! What I did wonder about though was whether or not the mouth guard is ok or whether that makes you gag too. Also, does anyone know whether you can choose to have it up the nose (nasendoscopy) or whether that only works for certain conditions?
    Thanks.

    Re: Endoscopy

Hi, did the doctor say you will have IV sedation? If so, I had two endoscopies and I was terrified. The first doctor had also done a colonoscopy on me and I was completely out of it, knew nothing at all. He told me it would be the same and it was. If you are going to be awake, I don't know what that is like. I am almost positive that this cannot be done through the nose but I imagine that that would be horrible...it would be long way an an extra step to get to your throat. Let me know what type of anesthesia he said you would have.

    Hi

I had a problem and my gp sent me to see a ENT specialist the week before last. I had a 'scope' up my nose that went down to my throat, it was a tad uncomfortable but no way was it painful. I was awake and it only took about 1/2 minutes.

    Good luck for your appt.

lauren6 Thanks for your reply...I've not even seen my consultant yet so I;m not sure what they will offer me...all I do know is there is no way I can go ahead with an oral endoscopy without sedation!!!!! When I know what they're giving me I'll let you know.

Trish Thanks for your reply also....I wonder what makes them decide whether they do it through the mouth or through the nose??? Any ideas? I think I could cope with the nose option but I gag just thinking about the mouth option...seriously!

    Re: Endoscopy

Dufus, I think Trish is referring to a nasal scope because she saw an ENT, not a gastroenterologist for the purpose of looking at the esophagus and stomach. I have never heard of that being done through the nose. That wouldn't make sense because the tube has to go down your throat and why disturb your nose also? If you have sedation, you won't be aware of a thing. I woke up and wondered when they were going to start. The only thing is sometimes your throat is a bit sore but that went away by nighttime, it was nothing.

    Re: Endoscopy

I had an endoscopy. I was sedated and all I remember is a slight gag as they removed the tube. They should sedate you if you ask.

    Thanks Lauren and Trish
I think I am going to ENT but my Doc seemes to think I might have Oesophagitis so that may be Gastroenterology?!?!? I personally think (and hope!!!) that I have GERD or LPR and the more I think about my symptoms, the less convinced I am that it is my Oesoph....I think it's the very low end of my throat (just in the hollow of the neck/colarbone).
Anyway, glad to know the sedation should do the trick!!!
