    Re: Bed wetting

    Hi Kez,
    My eldest son had this problem when he was about seven. He was given a mild sedetive medicine and a star chart. Although your son is too old for a star chart the sedative may help. I was told because my son was a light sleeper his body didnt shut down properly and some parts, like his bladder, was still 'awake'. After three weeks on the medicine and doing really well with his star chart he was dry, he did have the odd accident but nowhere like what he had been. I was also told it was hereditry, his dad had the same problem but his stayed with him to adult hood as his mum was too embarrassed to seek help.
    Take care,

    Our 9 year old has the same problem but, just to compound things, he also soils himself daily. Doctors have done all the tests and drawn a blank. The next step is psychological testing apparently. The strange thing is it just doesn't seem to bother him. He can't even go to other peoples' houses for long, let alone stay over, the smell can be quite overpowering. Frankly his mother and I are at our wits end with it. Not quite sure why I posted this except perhaps in solidarity.

    Mudskipper i have to tell you Ryan did the exact same thing. He soiled and wet his pants throughout the day, and that was in school! The other kids were really nasty to him and it was torture for him. Same as you he had all the medical tests done for it and they were all normal. One day he just stopped doing it, trust me it was a god-send. Trouble is all these kids have gone to secondary school with him and they dont forget, bless him.
    Now we just have to battle the night time. I am really starting to open my eyes and understand how it must be for him too.

    Well I'm glad he got it over it, hopefully Danny will too. I sometimes feel like the only thing that might encourage him to make more effort is if it starts affecting his relationship with the other kids. Right now no-one seems to have noticed and it's worse first thing in the morning and early evening, so it's me and his mother who deal with it most. Even so, I don't want him to become a laughing stock at school. He doesn't start secondary school for two years yet, and it'll probably be a different one from his peers, so maybe there'll be the option of a fresh start.

    contact the incontinence nurse at your surgery, also ask for a prescription for inco sheets which will prevent the urine from soiling the bed - nighttime pads will also be supplied :-) doc may also provide some very effective meds :-}

    Re: Bed wetting

    Well he went to the doctors this morning and she has reffered him to the enuresis clinic. I asked her for meds and she was very reluctant to prescribe him any. Anyway i told her he was supposed to be going on a course with Navy cadets for three days on 23rd Oct and he was to affraid to go because of his problem. It would be a great shame for him to miss it so she did prescribe him 7 days worth of desmopressin. She said GP's aren't allowed to prescribe it anymore cos they don't solve the problem and are not suitable for long term use.
    So we have some meds for his course and he has been refered, so in the meantime we will just have to cope and keep using pyjama pants.

    Thats good news I hope he has a good time ..Hope you dont have to wait too long to see the specialist .Are you going to try the meds to see if it helps before he goes ? You were lucky to get them perscribed by the sound of it ..Hope everything works out for him on his trip ,it will boost his confidence ,it must be very hard for him ,and I dont think it could be helping his state of mind . Other kids can be very cruel at times ..Take care Sue x
