I had a Sigmoidoscopy (colonoscopy) and they found a polyp

I am 20 years old and had been getting a little bit of blood on tissue paper when I went to the toilet. Not every time but sometimes. I got referred for a sigmoidoscopy and they found a polyp near my rectum. I'm pretty horrified because although i was sedated the procedure very much hurt me as I am a skinny girl. I know I'm now going to need a full blown colonoscopy and I'm terrified about the pain, the associated risks and the possibility of finding more polyps. They told me polyps were common but now i'm really scared i'm going to have bowel cancer as they are sending the polyp they found off to be tested. ahhhhhhh.

Please don't be worried about the polyp. Like you were told, they're quite common. They always send anything they find to be tested. It doesn't mean anything .. it's just something that's always done. I had a colonoscopy a few years back where they found inflamed areas and they didn't know what they were. They immediately did a biopsy and I had myself half nuts for a week. It turned out to be nothing. Please don't worry, you'll be fine.
