I think the key thing here is whether the blood is fresh (bright red) or 'old' (dark red). Old blood has come from deep inside - which is not a symptom of IBS - but I have IBS and I do get bright red blood occasionally. I can always relate this to a time when I've had difficulty going to the loo and I am prone to getting fissures (which also sting or hurt a bit) just inside.
