reassurance bowel issue

Hi folks,

My daugher (20s) was at the doctor this morning with blood from her back passage (sorry to be graphic).....I told her it would just be piles or something etc however she was examined and there was nothing like that found, she said the doctor sounded quite concerned and took a blood test, she gets these results on Thursday morning and then she spoke about urgent referral, as expected my daughter is now panicking, she does suffer ibs etc as well.

Im also mega stressed and wonder if anyone can shed any light on anything it could be, she generally keeps well and good health.

I would imagine they could be checking for chrons or colitis perhaps? There are a couple of people on here who have chron's disease. But this is me guessing. Being as she is in her 20's the risk is very low to non existent for anything like bowel cancer.

I am glad she is getting checked out and referred. Must be such a worry for you all

I'm sure you're filled with good intentions but you're asking us to speculate on something that the doctor hasn't yet been able to diagnose. The most common cause of rectal bleeding has been effectively ruled but remember that not all piles/fissures can be diagnosed by a digital exam by the doctor. Any answers we give are just about as useful as Google... as in, not very much and are probably likely to cause just as much upset.

I know it's tough but I think on this occasion you need to wait for the doctor to get back to her, speculating and guess work is only going to get her and you more panicky and stressed.

I do hope the doctor can help your daughter out though and that things work themselves out for the better, please remember though that although the doctor has asked for an urgent referral that doesn't mean there is anything urgently wrong, the doctor could just be covering all the bases.
I hope you both get answers soon!

I second what Chris has said, sometimes I think piles/fissures can be quite high up?

Thanks for replying, oh and I havent told her I posted this....Im one of those people who used to google and make myself worry more so I dont do it anymore so I just come on here....but dont worry I have already reassured her they have to check these things out (I know the right things to say to her but then I quietly freak lol).

I had bleeding 4 years ago and scared the hell out of me. I went straight to the Doctors that morning and after an examination she wasn't that concerned.
After seeing a specialist at the hospital after a few weeks, he discovered piles. He had to use a scope to see a bit further as they were higher up. If the blood was a bright red then it's normally fresh and piles. Since then, Iv'e never 'strained' and touchwood, never had any more problems.

Hi, agreed with everyone that this is probably nothing to worry about but your doctor is being conscientious by talking about a referral when the inital exam found nothing. Blood in the stools can be caused by a variety of non-urgent problems including an anal tear or a fistula, which is more problematic but IIRC not highly serious if treated. I read that bowel cancer is usually indicated by a lot of blood in the stool but even the presence of large amounts of blood do not guarantee cancer.
