    Anti-depressants for PMT??

    Hello

Went to the doctors this morning as yesterday I went home sick from work as my period pain was so bad.

Have been really suffering with my periods, in particular the week/10days leading up to my period, when I can't cope with anything, can't be bothered to make an effort with life in general, and basically feel like a different person [xx(]

    (get the violins out!!!! lol)

So the doctor has prescribed me something for the pain, but I asked him what I could take for the psychological side of things. He wasn't a big fan of natural remedies, and offered me some anti-depressants for the PMT. I'm not to keen on this as I know nothing about them, and wondered if anyone knew what type of medication he would be talking about?

    Cheers
    Julia x

I take it you've already tried the evening primrose oil, Omega 3's etcetce

It not highly recommended that antidepressants are prescribed for cyclic mood swings but I have heard of it before.

Strange that he doesn't believe in even trying complementary but is happy to give you strong chemical mood changers.

    Hi Julie

I am having exactyly the same problems, I get severe periods with terrible pain like im in labour! I also get tearful and sore breasts.

I have been reading up online about this problem and have just started on a wild yam cream which is supposed to help because it has natural progersterone in it which soaks into the skin (apparently people who suffer pmt have too much estrogen)
Doctors arent too clued up about this but its worth a go i thought.

The good news is, it also meant to help with anxiety!

    Meg,
That is exactly what I thought- he just completely dismissed the whole natural remedy thing. In fact I was only in with the doctor for literally a couple of minutes, he just gave me a prescription for Mefenamic Acid for the pain, and I was dismissed. I dont know what I expected to be honest..!

I have made changes to my diet but I get awful cravings for 'bad' foods when I am due on, and get really shakey if I dont satisfy the cravings, so that can be hard.

I think I'll do some research into natural remedies... xxx

The GI diet is good for those cravings

Mirry - wild yam is certainly good for menopause as well as black oshkosh

I found making a wholemeal crumble for when i have food cravings,
It has no sugar but tastes fantastic and naughty!

rub together wholemeal flour with low fat margarine.
then stew some apples in a pan and add plenty of nutmeg/cinnamon/vanilla essence.

    serve with single cream.[}]
