    Will CBT help me?

I finally got a letter today about receiving CBT after issues with communication between them and my GP.
But I've been doing so much on my own, like going on the bus and steadily increasing the distance, meeting my boyfriends family and generally going out more.
So I was wondering would CBT still help me now that I'm at this stage. It'd be nice to hear what stage other people were at when they started their CBT.
    Thanks

Hi, I started CBT at about that stage, i was getting myself better, going out on my own for a little while etc, i did find that the CBT still helped though as it was a confidence boost. Its funny because i felt like i knew alot of what they were saying but i always feel it seems more comforting when you here it from someone else. dont know whether anyone else finds this??

I'm a little nervous about opening up about my past to a stranger but I guess I probably will benefit for it.
We'll just have to wait and see how it goes

    Hi,

Yes I think cbt could help you.

When I started cbt apart from going to work I wasn't doing anything.
I have social phobia and found it hard to go on the bus, the local shop, wait in long queues, go to Asda, go to the cinema and to eat out. I find it easier to do these things now. My therapist referred me for more cbt - a higher step than I did first.
This doesn't mean that because you are further a long it won't help you.
One of the things your therapist will probably do is to ask you to make a list of what you are still finding difficult starting with the easiest and working up to the situation that you find most difficult, she/ he will break it down for you into managable steps and make it as easy as possible for you.

What I still find most difficult is social situations like parties, weddings, christenings and any family occasions and being around people in work. My therapist is going to help to split this into another list that I will work through, I'm not sure how this will work yet lol!

I think its worth giving it a go the two therapist I have seen seem to know what they are talking about and they have both been really lovely and easy to talk to.

Good luck if you do decide to go to therapy.

By the sounds of it I'll learn alot about what I still need to do so it will be helpful.
Thanks everyone. I will go ahead with it and see how it goes.

I definitely think it will help you! The thing about cbt is if they are treating you properly you don't talk about your past. Cbt is all about moving forward and learning to live in the present
Good luck and the real progress comes between sessions in your daily thought countering using the TEA forms so focus your efforts on them and you will be surprised at your progress a few months from now

I have heard of this treatment before, but like a lot of you, find it diffiicult to open up to a stranger. I think that is part of the problem when you suffer with anxiety and panic attacks, it makes you worry about everything. My problem is worrying about what other people think of me on top of everything else. I would deffinately give it a go though. Just push yourself to do it!! You might aswell try everything you can x

Give it a go. I am seeing a counsellor - she specialises in anxiety. Its general talking counselling but she is doing CBT with me at the mo as my attacks are new and quite frequent and I need to handle them better. A lot of stuff in my past has carried with me into my present (most of which I was unaware of until I went to see her). Its all linked with my nerves and why I am now suffering from anxiety attacks. She is a lovely lady and I find it a real help. Good luck and keep us posted. xx

In CBT there is less talk and more teaching you new skills so your therapist is not supposed to judge you and opening up in front of them is not important, but the homework is. Go for it
