Babe i dont personally think it is meant in that way...you arnt mental...of course you arnt..i am lol ... no its just labeled as that because even though we have body feeling and we all have real bad pain..dont we...but its to do with our mental health as anxiety/panic/depression is to do with our minds love.
I was with mind a few years ago and that too, like many others are all part of a mental health team,,, dont look at it like that love really..its not meant in that way... ok darling ...

    Hi Mirry,

Yes it's perfectly normal to get the letter you got. Most people are assessed by their local Community Mental Health Team and it's them who decide the best treatment (e.g CBT) depending on the results of the assessment they give you. I've been assessed twice and turned down for CBT twice as I was not considered bad enough so I went private.
Anxiety and depression are mental health issues, they label it mental health because it is mental health. It doesn't mean you are mental though just that it's an illness of the mind. As long as you get some help try not to worry about what it's called.

    Take care,

    Lisa

    Yes it is totally normal.

    Mental health is just that.
The title does not suggest in any way that you are mad, that is just your interpretation, it just means that you are being seen by a practicioner specialising in emotional and psychiatric services.

When you think you have a cardiac issue you see a cardiologist whether its for tests or for assessment. This is no different.

Which another specialist you think would be more appropriate ?

Maybe the dictionary definition may help...

mental - Of or relating to the mind; intellectual
Executed or performed by the mind; existing in the mind

So don't worry you are not going mad or anything.

    Hi Mirry

As others have said this is just a title and doesn't imply that you are mad or anything like that.

It is the usual referral path to be assessed by someone from the mental health team prior to being referred on for therapy, be that CBT or whatever they consider appropriate.

As everyone else said, yes this is normal practice for getting CBT on the NHS.

"mental" and "madness" are perceptions, I believe I have mental health problems because even though many of my problems are physical symptoms, physically I am pretty fit. Mentally, well I am as you would say "mad" !!

Take no offence from the whole thing, as I said it is a perception, you know you are not mad, I know I am mentally ill. It doesn't change anything, we still have the symptoms and need the help!

    Good luck with your CBT.

Mirry hun I am just the same - I loathe the term mental health, I much prefer emotional health.

Maybe you and I have trouble with that one because it brings up pictures and images we dont like or want to be classified as. I guess it's all semantics really (have I got that right) cos whatever we call it it boils down to the same thing.

I know I would prefer to be approached by an Emotional Health worker rather than a Mental Health worker - mind you of course that would become just a label in time and we wouldn't like that one either.

Think it is all part of the accepting we have anxiety really but I do understand where you are coming from.

    Specially big hug mate.
