    Therapeutic dose

Can anyone tell me exactly what psychiatrists/doctors mean when they use the term "therapeutic dose".

    Hi Yvonne,

A therapeutic dose means the amount of medication you need for it to have an effect. For example if you take aspirin for a headache you might need 500mg, but if you are taking it long term to thin your blood because you have heart problems you only need to take 75mg. In this case for a headache, 500mg would be the therapeutic dose. Hope i haven't confused you too much! I'm studying to be a doctor so we learn things like this, i just hope i can understand it enough to explain it to other people!

    Dear Sarky

Thanks so much for the reply. .... Now I understand.

Studying to be a doctor - that's brilliant - a doctor on the forum!

    Good luck with your studies.
    Take care
