can garlic make ibs worse?

I've had ibs for over 12 years now with 'flare ups' every couple of weeks or so.

Cause i'm so afraid of triggering it off my diet it is basically the same most days I tend not to introduce many 'new' foods.

For the last 5 days I had been feeling quite good with very few symptoms. However, yesterday I started to feel a bit off now this morning I feel worse (very grumbly angry sounding tummy, feeling of fullness, nauseous and I've need to go to the loo quickly and couple of times so far)

I've been trying to think back to what i've eaten and the only thing different was some Boursin garlic cheese. Although I didint eat loads of it (just a bit on some crackers for lunch and a dollop in a tomato pasta sauce for dinner) i'm starting to think that maybe garlic can play a part in my flare ups.

Has anyone else found garlic to be one of the culprits?

Defo the cheese... as it is a soft cheese... Mmmm i love that cheese.... sometimes i can eat it and be fine, other times if i eat that or any other type of cheese my ibs flares up... for example.. i had a sunday lunch on sun ( obviously lol) and may ibs had flared up terribly as we had stilton potato with it....

Yes its the same with me,sometimes I can eat something and be fine, thats why I thought perhaps it was the garlic as ive had soft cheese recently and was fine but havent had garlic for a while. I must admit I do try to keep off of diary cause i do think it causes flare ups ( oh how I long for an evening of cheese and crackers followed by a giant thick chocholate milkshake!)

Why is it that the things that are the yummiest are the things that make the symptoms worse

Personally, anything in the allium family makes my IBS much worse: onion is the chief offender, followed by garlic, then leeks, shallots and even chives.

Garlic and onions will add to the gale force winds we've been having and I would think it'd add to IBS flare-ups in certain people too.

It definitely sounds like the culprit to me Ruby.

I stay clear of garlic and onions as well. Get dreadful wind which leads to an IBS attack.

I love garlic and onions but they just do not like me anymore
