When trying to upload a new avatar the error message is 'Upload failed due to failure writing temporary file.'
This is most likely due to CHMOD/permissions, setting to 777 should work.

Hmm we shouldn't need to chmod the directory to 777. Others have uploaded avatars ok so let me look at it for you.

Did you try to upload a pic from your PC Piers?
I just tried it as my other login of "nicola" and it worked fine.
